Manliness

What does manliness mean to you?

Oh, I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day.

CHORUS: He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch,
I go to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin’
And have buttered scones for tea.

Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch,
He goes to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays ‘e goes shoppin’
And has buttered scones for tea.

CHORUS: He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I skip and jump,
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women’s clothing,
And hang around in bars.

Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women’s clothing
And hangs around… In bars???

CHORUS: He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
Suspendies and a bra.
I wish I’d been a girlie
Just like my dear papa.

Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
Suspendies?? and a … a Bra???
(spoken, raggedly) What’s this? Wants to be a girlie? Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!

My Long Dong Silver

Manliness, or what it means to be a man, is

An Awareness of the fundamental violence of the human male

An unconcerned attitude towards the frivolous (sp?)

A joyous spirit

a generousity of spirit that takes the time to teach and guide (“avuncular”)

the drive to make your mark on the world

The desire to remain independent and without master

Feel free to add what you will

I would add that only in a post feminized, post homosexualized world could this vital question be mocked with the Lumberjack Song

That’s just it. The traditional rules of manhood don’t seem to apply anymore, or for that matter aren’t even particularly useful. We lost men need to band together to form new defintions of manhood, for this new wishy washy foundationless age.

you missed it… it is the manley men who do the mocking…

to laugh at the absurdity of the world on its face…

I know, I’ve seen it. I got to thinking about where the joke went awry and then I stopped. That’s just too damn many levels of irony for me. After two I just stop.

Courage. Dignity. Industrioiusness. Loyalty. Integrity.

Because a cowardly, undignified, lazy, disloyal, inconsistant fellow ain’t much of a man.

The first proplem here is that your ideas of the traditional male role is based on a Eurocentric world view. Their are traditionally matriarichal societies.

But I like what you said about banding together and redifing manhood, making our own modern ideas of masculinity. Clearly a side effect of the feminist movement to redifine feminity. Not saying either of these things are bad things, I like 'em both, am saying that they are connected and that every generation needs to define its own cultural roles.

Lanky Wanky,

how would You redefine it?

men are visually stimulated :astonished:

Orally too, or so I have heard.

when there with me they are  :evilfun:

Hubba Hubba!

…waits for De’trop…

Wasn’t really expecting that question, but… I suppose I would say in the way I try to live my life. That masculinity is defined by acting honorably, respectfully and considerately. But that’s how I’d like to see everyone act. But that would be entirely different if I had women fawning all over me.
