McCain, Patriotism

I’m an American. I like to think that I appreciate the advantages that being an American gives me, but I don’t really ‘love’ my country.

Honestly, I don’t even know what that means. The people chanting “USA, USA, USA!” I suppose love their country; Mccain talking about going across party lines to achieve a common end, maybe that is.

The thing is, when McCain was making it clear that he would do anything, as long as it profited America- if that is loving your country, I don’t think it is a good thing. I suppose my problem is, I don’t understand what it means to ‘benefit’ a country, unless you mean make it more powerful economically or militarily.

In my view, a country is a tool- like a house, maybe- you can form a kind of attachment to your house, you can help it out, you can appreciate the work other people have put into your house and what you owe to them- but why would we ever make improving this house be the aim of our existence? Doesn’t make sense.

That’s one interpretation of "helping your country. Maybe he means, ollowing some ideal of justice and liberty- but that’s hardly an ideal, “freedom, justice and liberty for Americans”- ugh.

If he thinks that he has some special obligation to an abstract machine; if he feels that he is owes his life to anyone that’s paid taxes, I can’t agree with him.

So I suppose my main problem is, I’m not sure what he means by America.

people talk about how “Patriotic” they are, when don’t have anything else
to talk about. Some one way back when said," Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel"
and it is true. The GOP hide behind Patriotism because frankly they don’t have anything else
to offer america. The GOP motto is “of the rich, for the rich, by the rich” and they can’t really use that
as a bumper sticker, so they hide behind the flag and Patriotism hoping that people fall for their
“flag waving, pin wearing, I am more of an American then you are” crap. Maybe this is the election that
make that BS go away.

The second one is more interesting, but it needs the context of the first one. So I provide, to you, some food for thought:

On patriotism

More musings about patriotism

Too bad McCain’s love for America is highly contingent:

Some patriot . . .

Impenitent: fucking left wing wanna be heroes can enlist

K: the same way dick chaney and donald rumsfield enlisted and how
george bush enlisted, by hiding in Alabama then bailing out before the end of his tour."
The same way you enlisted…oh, yeah as I recall you were 4-f, weren’t you?
brave talk from someone who couldn’t serve in any case.

IMP: I can’t wait until november"

K: Much will happen between now and then including the bombing of Iran. It won’t be pretty.

Lol

Patriotism is like slapping “I’m an idiot” on your forehead.

I don’t look into american politics, but the few times I ever get a taste of it I just laugh.

The McCain campaign ads I see on tv:

“The other candidates are ready to spend taxes, but none are ready to lead. Vote McCain!”

Omg they’re like so right, what was I thinking? The extent of my understanding of politics is that of a peanut but I’m still going to vote because my vote counts! Taxes are all that matter to me because my life is based around financial business because I’m an american and if those other candidates are going to spend my money and not lead then by golly I’m voting for McCain because the campaigners that are paid with my tax dollars to get my vote told me to.

A fucking retard would be convinced by that.

Are you joking? Is this a joke? Is that all it takes to get someone to vote?

All Obama has to do is go “peace man” and they’re falling at his feet.

no, mccain was a fighter pilot, not a tank driver…

I wish it were a joke. But when you go to Fox news or CNN and start reading through the comments section of articles posted about either candidate, you realize the dire straits we are really in. The level of discource in regards to politics in this country is borderline incoherent, and yet enflamed with passion. What a dangerous concoction.
