Morality is Practicality.

There are times were people claim that they toss morality aside for the sake of practicality.

Or that they reject it outright as an “artificial/social construct”, as if something man made (whether it is or not) is any less real.

From what I’ve seen Morality is often based on a long view of Practicality, the Bigger picture/Greater good. Or at the very least that is it’s intention.

But often some believe themselves above those who coform and believe themselves amazingly clever for apparently living better without morality.

Like someone who takes a lump sum of wealth quickly rather then doubling a small percentage by 2 each day for 30 days, the short sightedness is in actuality the less prosperous route.

By practicality I assume that you mean in their own self interest. If so, I agree.

Despite thinking morality to be a social construct I doubt that people think it is any less real, rather I think that the main point is that there is no God to enforce it.

The majority of moral rules would focus on the bigger picture or the greater good.

Some people exude a kind of pride in their rejection of what is considered moral.

The linkage between morality and shortsightedness seems to me to be difficult to discern. Isn’t the main point that people reject morality despite thinking that following a moral system would be better?

From what I’ve seen, people who reject morality do so because they believe it to be a hindirince with no beneficial value to them.

Falling into the same pitfalls that morality is trying to help people avoid.

In a war, the other guy and all he professes is bad and wrong.

“Practicality” is nothing. A bacteria has its own practicality too. Very shallow.

Btw. Nietzsche thinks Englishmen are stupid and Americans shallow.

I don’t understand the relevance of the last two contributions.

I think morality (as a global construct) is practicality in so far as that… when others practice it, it benefits you… e.g. ‘thou shall not kill’

now whether or not the individual actually practices that same morality above other more practical considerations… i suppose some people do and some people don’t, and i assume some people unintentionally practice some common moral practices

personally, i independently consider actions on an individual basis, and make my own mind… if it happens to be the moral choice, then i guess that’s a good thing, right?

i define my own morals

others can do what they will with that tidbit of knowledge
