MORE LOGIC

The logic threads die too fast. I want it ongoing. Especially with those at about my modest level, from which we can learn mutually.

This is intended for some random questions and answers for the sake of learning logic.

I’d like anyone to explain modal logic to me a little better. Is it simply the modal operator (the diamond) that makes it separate? Can you give me an example of a type of phrase you could only say using modal logic and not propositional logic?

Also, can you give me examples of logical operators that help consolidate math and other logic? Can you somehow seemlessly put math equations with logical statements, and not have to resort to spoken words?

Also, something that annoys me much is the function equation- Eg: f(x)=x^2+5 Anyone in Calculus is familiar enough to know that this is identifying a function. But a person perfectly disciplined in basic math, that has not been introduced to calculus, will automatically think . . . “f*x?” when in fact the f(x) is to say “the function of x”. Couldn’t there be some small prefix symbol for “f” that delineates it as an operator and not a variable?

Just to add-- anyone that isn’t very familiar with symbolic logic is not at a loss. If you have a few hour’s patience, I encourage you to take the course and visit The Logic Cafe. By the end you will sound just like all the other logic geeks on the forum.
