[Movie] Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Finally got around to seeing this movie, after hearing for so long how good it is. My first guess was, when people say “this movie is awesome” and so forth, they mean the graphics. If they don’t mean the graphics (and the music for that matter), they have a serious problem discecting the difference between what makes a movie and what makes entertainment.

I will allow the writers of this movie this much: it was a cool concept for the story. Aside from that, the screenplay, directing, and editing all amounts to one thing: GARBAGE.

If I didn’t give this movie intense praise for the CG achievement, I would be as stupid as the screenwriters, director, producer, and editor… so… I gladly and whole-heartedly praise the CG achievement of this film. It is outstanding, although almost not as good as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (over-use of soft blur techniques).

The music is outstanding… Nobuo Uematsu never ceases to amaze, impress, and touch my heart. I only wish that the music played a more prominent role… its overall volume seemed a bit drowned in the sound effects and dialogue: undertoned. It was the same exact problem I found with Star Wars: Episode III. Even the signiture track “One-Winged Angel” wasn’t given enough majesty… although I could still hear it enough to say: “I want to hear that again!”

So… all in all, this isn’t a movie… it’s just entertainment. I could pull the railgun out on why this isn’t a movie, but that would give away the garbage of what you may wish to call a “plot.”

Few of the FF series has any revolutionary stories. I say this as I am playing FF-X again and they suit many cliches. The main reason for this is cause it works. The games are entertaining and the movie I think was just a quick taste of the absurfly amazing CGI techniques and the success of the FFVII film. I saw this movie about 6 months or so before it came out in the U.S. through the aid of my Japanese pirate friends from FFXII. Once you look at it as a serious movie it fails; but if it is a mindless romp to make you love the characters uberness a bit more it works. But yes I indeed see your point Sage.

I think what really bummed me out was the fact that the Final Fantasy series are reknowned for character development and the weaving of an engaging plot. Sure, we get some development in Advent Children, but really, it never even came near to par of what we see in the games.

Ya although we must understand it is far easier to develop and evolve characters over 40+ hours than it is with just 2.

I didn’t expect any real story line or character development in Advent Children, although I still enjoyed the nostolgic feeling I got from watching it and the amazing CG graphics battle scenes.

I do think that FF7 had an amazing story line, despite what anyone says.
FF6, mabye even more interesting.
The rest of the FFs, were enough to go above and beyond any other RPG I have ever played (besides Starocean), but not enough to go beyond FF7.

My second favorite Final Fantasy…FF9, in fact at times…I like it even more than FF7.

Cmon, can I get some FF9 love?

The thing about the movie was you got a lot more enjoyment out of it if you played the game. I already knew the characters, so I didn’t need that character development. I really love this movie, but I’m a severe ff dork, and that’s the audience it was geared towards. This is the movie I thought Spirits Within was going to be, you actually Final Fantasy.

Yeah, the true ff dorks are the ones who are going to love it.

I always like the story of 7, but it not my favorite. 4 is still the best as far as I’m concerned, I think it had the best story, and at a close second 5, but that because that game was so easy to abuse as far as power level goes.

Oh yeah, I agree. 9 was far better then 7, for one reason, Zidane. 7 and 8 had such pain in the ass main characters. Don’t get me wrong, I like Cloud, but I didn’t like him as the main lead of the story. But Zidane rocked.

Yeah Cloud was kinda a weird ass, but he was still pretty hardcore.
It wasn’t really Zidane that made it for me, it was all the characters, there was a lot of personality, and the art style was so cool.
The castle era mixed with airships and some psuedo-advanced technology, I loved it.
And the card game was way cooler than FF8’s

Forgot to mention about side quests though, this game’s sidequest were not nearly as extensive as FF7’s, and thats what made FF7 so re-playable.

FF10 had the best one of all though (BLITZBALL!), and I hope the next FF has something of equal coolness.

I got so bored playing 8, I never finished it. I wasn’t ever really into the card game, I just didn’t really care.

Lets not even talk about 8, it was a complete disgrace. I’m trying to think of one thing that was cool about it…unique…hmm…tell me if you can figure it out cause I definitely can’t. If you like soppy love stories though and cool CG cut scenes then you might want to give it a try.

The opening CG scene was good, there it is, that was the cool thing about it.

Now see, I like love stories, just not this one. I could go on and rant about why the game sucks, but I won’t go there. What was good about it, it was easy, but that might be a bad thing too.

True, but then you have movies like The Godfather that achieve excellent character development with drama, action, intrigue, and cannolis

…even better examples would be The Shawshank Redemption and Star Wars: Episode V… fantastic character development given the movie running time.

So anotherwords… it really comes down to directing and writing… which in Advent Children, was GARBAGE.

FFIX was a great solid all-around game with a successful attempt at re-capturing the mideval-esque nature of the original Final Fantasies… of course, it had some problems (social). Kuja looked like a woman… and when I played the game for the first time, having no foreknowledge whatsoever of the characters, and seeing the first cinematic with Kuja, I thought that character was a woman until well into the game when it was revealed he was a dude… What is it with the Japanese and gay badguys that wear way too much makeup? First Kefka, then Kuja… sheez…

…and then there’s Zidane…

…he found a red card too!!!

FFVIII was Square’s attempt at seeing how cheeky they could make a Final Fantasy. End of story.

Indeed, i only watched it hear to Sephiroth’ ballad.

FF6 all the way. 7 close behind.

8 = ugh

This movie? idk. Guess I might have to see it.

There was a particular scene I saw the first time that I thought was really messed up (poorly edited) and I had to watch it again to make sure I knew what I saw.

SPOILER

There’s a particular moment during the motorcycle highway chase scene where Reno and Rude are waiting with a bomb to blow up Loz and Yazoo as they exit the tunnel after Cloud. Now, all we really see is a bomb going off and being left with no other visuals, we must make the assumption (also based on the brief conversation between Reno and Rude have just before Loz and Yazoo exit the tunnel), that all four are dead from the bomb blast. Unfortunately, as it turns out, there must be some law in this movie that unless we see people die in the flesh, they don’t. This being said, despite the huge explosion and the assumed death having taken place for all four, we see them appear later in the film as if nothing happened.

Even really bad action flicks never make a screwup that bad…

Actually I wondered that same point. Because also the two people who were tortured and assumed dead in the Mountain scene show up as well later.

I don’t watch it for the plot, the animation, music, voices (the Japanese are good at choosing good voice actors, but I don’t like most dubs), and Sephiroth/Vincent/Cloud/Kadaj is quite good enough for me. Not that it’s the sort of film I want to watch often, but it’s fun to watch, especially with friends.

Cait Sith looked lame in this movie. He, or it shouldn’t have been in it imo. Also, some parts could have been more realistic. I know it’s fiction, but still.

Sagesound:Zidane

=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

FFVII, I know some people tend to drift away from it as their favourite because of it’s popularity, but it truly is a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

FFVIII, cliche, melodrama, crappy gameplay, CGI:pretty good, MUSIC:GENIUS, cliche, cliche, cliche…melodrama

FFIX, hearkening back to the originals, with a great and individual atmosphere, character developement, and universe, If it was wholly it’s own game and didn’t depend on the classic FF’s it would be as much a masterpiece as FFVII.

FFX, very much westernly influenced…ugh

FFXII, unbelievably terrible, the most unoriginal piece of crap ever, they must have just thought:
‘‘dum, dum, dum…let’s take FF’s I all the way to V, give them a makeover, and sell it off.’’
Makes me so angry.

As for Advent Children, same problems as that dreadful Dirge Of Cerberus(Devil May Cry rip-off) thing, cliched, westernised, entertainment at the expense of artistic purity.
