[Movie] - Snakes on a Plane

Film: Snakes on a Plane
Staring: Samuel L. Jackson, and snakes
Director: David R. Ellis
Writers: John Heffernan, and Sebastian Gutierrez

Here we are at what Hollywood thought would be the apex of the SoaP phenomenon and after a lackluster opening weekend I have finally seen this epic. When I sat down to this film with my cherry icee in hand I expected to see CG snakes, Sam Jackson kicking ass, and senseless violence. What I didn’t expect was to find myself enjoying the movie on more levels than just camp.

Let me first bring to light that I am deathly afraid of snakes, so other people may not feel the same way, but this movie freaked the crap out of me. Which I can only pat the good Snake folks on the back for because there are only a handful of movies that really scared the stuffins right out of me. The movie is littered with jumpatcha moments and slow slithering chills that will have me checking my feet for rogue snakes for the next couple of days.

I won’t go on about the story because as we all know the title says it all. Sure there’s a witness to a murder thing happening, but that’s really secondary to the thrills of the snakes. The movie is propelled at a lightning pace with every possible problem that crazy snakes could cause explored in great detail with the fearless hero Sam Jackson at the lead. The very best sight gag has to be “snake vision” where the whole screen is a phosporis green though a fish bowl… its classic!

Another suprise I had when watching the film was how good the supporting characters were. Each major passenger was set up with quirks and just enough depth to make them enjoyable and for us to care whether they live or die. Whether that be the cute blonde with the yappy dog, the germophob rap mogel, or his video game expert right hand man the plane is loaded with colorful characters. My favorite though was probably the flaming male flight attendent with a twist.

So, everyone, do youself a favor and go out and see this flick. Its funny, its campy, but its also genuinly suspensful and has some great character moments. This is easily one of the top three films I’ve seen this summer.

Rating: A

What’s ‘campy’?

campy is the dwarf in a tent

as in filled with “camp”. campy, corny, cheesy.

that was the most ridiculous movie i’ve ever seen. in a good way.

anyone who goes so far to make such a serious movie out of such a… nonsensical plotline deserves a congressional medal of honor. truly, amazing. samuel l. jackson rules.

worst ending ever though. i wanna know what happened to eddie kim.

This movie was tolerable, I guess it was good. “B” I give it.

A very decent movie, just has to be watched with the right attitude. I don’t know if this is true or not , but there is a rumour going around that some of the more ridiculous lines were put in after people on the internet recomended them.

Well the oh-so-famous line that might as well be on the cover of the DVD when it comes out, “I have had it with these motherfcking snakes on this motherfcking plane!”, was not originally in the script. Someone on the internet made it up, and it spurred so much interest in the movie that they wrote it in.

Its interesting how internet culture seems to pop up in mainstream cinema. I’m pretty sure the same thing happened with X3 and the line “I’m the Juggernaut bitch!” That line was on the internet way before the movie came out.

The movie was great.
The hype leading up to the movie ruined its chances.
It could have been a wonderful sleeper.

I semi-agree with you. However I think that the internet hype simply peaked too soon. If SoaP had come out three weeks or so earlier I think more people would have seen it. Its just that the hype was kind of dying when the movie finally came out. Though without the internet SoaP wouldn’t have been as good of a movie. So now the movie is welcome to find its place as a cult classic.

I really enjoyed the hype, that was more interesting than actually seeing the movie to me. Not that I’ve seen it.
