Music: What's your flavor?

Well, I noticed that music has been discussed in regard to why we enjoy it so much, and I know that a question similar to this has probably been asked on this forum, but I’m new and would like to know what kind of musical interests you all have. From what instruments you enjoy playing, to what favorite bands, solo artists, etc… you listen to.

I currently listen to a variety of music from electronic, hiphop, blues, jazz, reggae, dub, folk, traditional indian, progressive rock, etc…

One of my favorite instruments is the sitar, which Ravi Shankar plays so gloriously.

Other acts that I enjoy include Shpongle, Squarepusher, Illogic, the Orb, FSOL, Bill Laswell, Youth, Muddy Waters, John Hartford, Pink Floyd, Taj Mahal, Burnt Friedman, Bob Marley, Arovane, Daedalus, Tool, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Steve Reich, Gas, Sole, Alias, Sage Francis, Sixtoo, Prefuse 73, Savath & Savalas, Zakir Hussain, Radiohead, Ott, Simon Posford, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Celtic Cross, Dj Spooky, Twilight Circus Dub Soundsystem, Lyrics Born, Amon Tobin, Blackalicious, Tortoise, Praxis, Autechre, Brother Ali, Meat Beat Manifesto, and the list goes on and on. Thats what I’ve been listening to lately.

If you care to list what you like, or list something that you think might be down my alley, or anyone elses for that matter, please do so. Thanks for reading!

Ahh A Bill Laswell fan. Cool. tell me how do you feel about James Brown and Fela Kuti?

DJ Spooky is A prick, and he’s not that smart either. I know cuz I met him one time and therefore know everything

I like your taste in music. Tell me, how do you feel about

  1. Karnatic music?
  2. Music from Bahia, Brazil
  3. John Fahey?
  4. Bob Dylan

do you like any type of American Roots music? Real country, blues, old timey?

I’m into nu metal and happy hardcore meslef. i think it’s because of the enegry in them that make you feel good.

I think that I would really enjoy some Karnatic music as I’ve just found out its Southern Indian Classical. As for music from Bahia, Brazil, I haven’t delved into any of that. My friend told me that he recently saw a documentary on the intricacies of Cuban music that really peaked my interest. Never have heard of John Fahey. And Dylan, of course, is one of the greatest song writers ever. As for American Roots music and real blues, the only early blues I’ve come across was what I’ve seen in Martin Scorsese’s 7-pt Blues Special that aired on PBS and was released on DVD/VHS. Skip James, Son House, J.B. Lenoir, Otha Turner, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson, Professor Longhair, etc. Very thick, powerful, spiritual music. Especially Son House and Skip James. Can you recommend any specific Karnatic music/musicians? And have you heard Bill Laswell’s Emerald Aether: Shape Shifting? It’s a wonderful amalgamation of Celtic influences and precise electronic programming.

I’m not familiar with Nu-Metal, unless thats anything like Slipknot or Mudvayne. As for Happy Hardcore, yeah, lots of energy. I had a friend who used to mix Happy Hardcore and would listen to it with him, but now I can’t stand the stuff. Too damn cheesy. Maybe my emotions aren’t as extreme as they used to be. Have you listened to early Prodigy (Experience, The Jilted Generation) at all? Thats some high-energy stuff. You might enjoy that if you haven’t already checked it out. The track “3 Kilos” off of The Jilted Generation is amazing IMO. Less energy, but relaxed, chilled, cool, groovy, awesome.

Son House is the Man!
bahia - the most famous musicians from there are Olodum wonderful drums.

For Karnatic music especially check out the violin players - L Subramaniam and L Shankar they rock.

I own Emerald Aether and I have to say I don’t much Like it. It’s a failure in my opinion as the irish music and the dub/electronica seem to have nothing to do with one another. I think traditional irish music is funky enough already - check out Christy Moore and Planxty

sorry to report i-zachariah but nu-metal is very much slipknot, mudvayne and korn. i got all the prodigy albums and know what you mean, they are brilliant and to me stand alone with their own variety of electro-punk-rock and whatever else is in there. happy hardcore is very cheesy but i think thats why i like it, give me a few years and i will calm it all down and be chillin with ben harper albums and a stiff drink.

Other acts that I enjoy include Shpongle, Squarepusher, Illogic, the Orb, FSOL, Bill Laswell, Youth, Muddy Waters, John Hartford, Pink Floyd, Taj Mahal, Burnt Friedman, Bob Marley, Arovane, Daedalus, Tool, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Steve Reich, Gas, Sole, Alias, Sage Francis, Sixtoo, Prefuse 73, Savath & Savalas, Zakir Hussain, Radiohead, Ott, Simon Posford, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Celtic Cross, Dj Spooky, Twilight Circus Dub Soundsystem, Lyrics Born, Amon Tobin, Blackalicious, Tortoise, Praxis, Autechre, Brother Ali, Meat Beat Manifesto, and the list goes on and on. Ah, another muddy waters fan!
Do you know the story behind his music?

I’m sure theres something I don’t know about it. Enlighten me!

Muddy Waters managed to escape being enlisted as he listed his occupation as an “entertainer.”

A lot of his music is about war themes, mainly satire, and this refers to his father going to the war and being kiled.

He suffered from chronic depression, and felt that music was his only release.

A true musician.

I’m fairly familiar with Muddy Waters and have listened at one time or another to nearly everything he’s recorded from the forties to the mid sixties and I have to say I’ve never caught a war theme in his music. It sounds like you’re describing Guitar Slim though. I mean that would be a dead-on description of Guitar Slim some of his songs are “Story of My LIfe” - where his father dies and left the chill’ren all alone, “letter to my girlfriend” - where he’s a POW, there are others.

Ok I guess this is an invitation to list your favourite bands so here goes:
uz jsme doma, the melvins, the ruins, melt-banana, fantomas, the vaselines, angels of light, radiohead, the smiths, the pixies, the boredoms, nina nastasia.

I lisent to (mostly swedish) punk/hardcore.

Right now I am going through my music file and have the headphone on and can’t stop listening to Santana’s Game of Love, Simply Red’s Never Never Love, Gota’s European Comfort, and Hiroshima’s One Wish, and many R&B (old school ) songs. Probably not your type, but…

Have you ever listened to Alejandro Sanz cd, especially El Alma al Aire? If you haven’t, give it a try. Please. All in Spanish.

If I may, I’d like to make some suggestions:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Paybacks, Detroit Cobras, The Kills, The Libertines, Ours, Elliott Smith, Velvet Underground, Static X, Electric Six, !!!, Rapture

Most of these bands play rock music, with exception of the last three; I would say they play music you can actually dance to, and an Electric Six show would be best experienced drunk as the they are just hilarious.

I must stress Ours especially if you enjoy a beautiful voice; the singer has been compared to Bono, Thom Yorke, and he totally resents the comparison to Jeff Buckley. The bastard live was simply breath-taking.

Electric Six is a must see live, along with the Rapture and Static X.

Im pretty damn eclectic, but I absolutely love Trip Hop (Portishead and massive attack are my favs) and I worship the ground Maynard James Keenan walks (Tool and A Perfect Circle.)

I also love Metallica (well the older stuff), Ozzy, Alice in Chains, NIN, Nirvana, Tu Pac, Radio Head, REM, Outkast, Sarah McLauchlin and Prodigy. I really could go on and on lol.

Just finished listening to Soundscape UK’s Morning Song. Very nice. Love it !! Love the sound.

I listen to various things, just as long as it catches my interest for longer than thirty seconds (and for me, it’s difficult for a song to pull that off). I usually prefer foreign language songs (namely Italian and Japanese) just because I generally dislike English lyrics and bands, with the exceptions of Rage Against The Machine, Phil Collins, Earth Wind & Fire, Frank Sinatra, and Malcolm McLaren.

Sometimes I come across a rare video game song that I like. Right now that song is the orchestral version of Hikari from Kingdom Hearts (PS2), composed and arranged by Yoko Shimomura. Grant Kirkhope is another game composer that I find talented, though others seem to deem him “kiddy” or immature due to what kinds of games he writes music for.

radiohead, pink floyd, bob marley, emerson lake palmer, fatboy slim, jimmy hendrix, the beatles, the killers, depeche mode, rage against the machine, nirvana
