Music

What is everybody into? What’s your favorite band of all time? What bands have you recently been listening to?

I don’t restrict myself to a certain era or genre. I have high expectations though, ecspecially for newer bands, so I’m kinda picky. My favorite band without a doubt is the Velvet Underground, the forefathers of punk. Currently, I’ve been listening to Beck (saw him a few weeks ago, amazing, Yo La Tengo (the new ablum is awesome), Primal Scream, T. Rex, and some Zappa. This is kind of long but if you want specific albums I’d be more than happy expand. I love talking about music, so let’s get some discussions going.

I have been listening to “the who” new cd, “endless wire”

Kropotkin

I just discovered an amazing metal band called Dragon Force.

Watch the video. It’s very remiscient of Metalocalypse (if you’ve seen that.) Simultaneously hilarious and awesome.

I’ve gotten into Avantasia and back into Iron Maiden a lot more recently, thanks to the Maiden’s new album and my chance finding of Avantasia’s Metal Opera. My favorite band at this point would probably be Sonata Arctica with Stratovarius behind by a hair.

One band I just have to show around is Verbal Deception. I don’t actually like their music, but their whole setup makes me laugh.
The Pirates of Metal, hah! Click the link, you’ll see what I mean.

I am a fusion guitarist so my influences are bands like Return to forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, etc…
But I put Frank Zappa at the top…infinite talent.

AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, As I Lay Dying, The Ataris, The Beatles, Beethoven, Billie Holiday, Billy Idol, Billy Joel, Black Sabbath, Blondie, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Bob Seger (maybe. haven’t heard a lot but i have heard some good stuff from him.), Brand New, Cat Power, The Chariot, The Clash, Coheed and Cambria, Comeback Kid, Cream, The Cure, Damien Marley, David Bowie, Death Cab for Cutie, Dillinger Escape Plan, DJ Shadow, The Doors, The Dresden Dolls, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Foreigner, Fugazi, Godspeed You! This list took the better part of an hour at work to make. This is how little actual work I have to do, and how subsequently bored I am.

Zappa is the man. I just found this interview of him on crossfire. It’s from 1986 when the whole censorship issue was huge.

Did you read his auto-biography? Great book…
If you look at his body of work you can’t help but to put his capacity up there with Beethoven and the rest. His mind was immense. Complex patterns, synthetic modes, you name it…genius.

I like music without words.

I’m beginning to get into Allison Crowe… I don’t listen to enough piano music and I like that she plays an instrument. Too many musicians today have forgotten that imporant aspect of a music career.

But where is Sublime!?!?!

My tastes run the gamut from heavy metal to folk and from jazz to classical. Lately I’ve been listening to Neko Case quite a bit, and the last couple by Bright Eyes. Also a bit of Ani Difranco. But more often I find myself listening to jazz over the last month or so. Holly Cole, Dave Brubeck Trio, Robin McKelle and Sonny Rollins have been spinng over the last couple nights.

Hmm, I forgot Bright Eyes in my honorable mention list.

I’ve been playing Digital Ash in a Digital Urn a lot lately. Lifted is probably my favorite overall, but he’s got a lot of good stuff.

Alright you asked for it…here’s a few (actually quite a few)…

You just know that when a person posts a list of 40+ bands or whatever in alphabetical order, they have waaaaay too much free time on their hands.

Actually, I just copy and pasted from my facebook account but hey think what you want. To be quite honest, I could care less.

I typed it all up off of an Ipod and organized it into two lists.

Haha, I did it at 2 am last night because I couldn’t sleep and had nothing better to do. And yes, I probably do have too much time on my hands but hey that’s not my fault. Blame that on the college I go to; I wish I had more schoolwork to keep me occupied. There’s just so little and it’s far too easy.
