Name me 1 famous woman philosopher, and what she taught?

 =D>

How about the witch Diotima, referenced in Plato’s Symposium?

Well Simone Weil is very well known and respected in the field of ethics

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simone_Weil

And what about Iris Murdoch?

The whole idea of even starting a discussion like this seems rather tedious and sexist to me

Consider how (relatively) little time women have had to express their ideas the same way as men. If you looked at “famous philosophers” that existed in a more recent time period only, you’d probably find a greater percentage of them to be women.

Perhaps these female philosophers are not yet great, perhaps it is due time. Yet , I have not found them to make such in impact in society due to this time.

Kriswest- it proves my point that these female philosophers you are naming are just unknown and nobodies, since you say you google them.
The great female philosophers I am looking for are those that could be remembered without searching them.

I love women and I usually like to look, wonder, and stare at the pretty ones but never be able to listen to them,

Just look at history it is always the founding fathers not the founding mothers. And look at our website forum, Neitchze, Marx, Plato, Freud,
not even one woman!

Freud?

Trisha

Martha Nussbaum
Anscombe (of Oxford)

Some one mentioned Simone De Beauvoir. She’s certainly an interesting case in point. I am strongly of the opinion that if she hadn’t of ended up partnered and over shadowed by Sartre she could have made a major impact. just finished reading her “ethics of ambiguity” and she succeeds far better than any other existentialist in actually trying to tease out how and if existentialistism could have ethics. Also brilliantly written.
I would have to go with the theory that women just haven’t got the chances but without some loons here will have a reductioist explanation as to men being more creative than women
Come on lets be having ya

Why must a female be a philosopher to be great?

Perhaps their strengths do not lie in making life a big deal, but in somewhere else.

I think it could be the 2nd time Simone is mention if there was a 5th or 6th time, that can back her up to be great, I may even think about looking into Simone. But now you said that she is an essentailist she is no longer a universal being, and only people who are interested essentalist will found her to be dazzling.

Now that question about why must a woman be a philosopher to be great?
First in formost I have ask the question who is the greatest and woman philosopher, and none I have found is satisfactory.

I like the question about the chances. Tell you the truth, chances always exist but the individual’s insight is unwilling to take them because of fear and persecution, same for men.

Just admit it there are no great women philosophers. yet anyways.

You’ve never heard of Ayn Rand? She was a loon, but still. Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead are nearly required reading to live, and she had a massive effect on economics.

What is your definition of great?

I think that by ‘great’ he means ‘male’, thus in saying

“There are no great female philosophers” he is actually saying
“There are no male female philosophers” which is axiomatic

That is a great interpretation of my definition of great.
But let me add a few more things about the meaning of great.
I would believe something that has made a big impact, and eventually will continue to be remember through time to eternity by all kinds of people, not particular people, like I study philosophy, this man is the father of philosophy which is why he is remembered. But the great man I perfer is the one not only he is remember for the philosophers but by all kinds or universal people. No restrictions nor limitations. EX: like Leonardo De Vinci, famous for many things, if he wrote or not about philosophes his philosophies would also be great The potential that is guarantee for universal success that the person possess = great.

I was thinking something about the past days about Adam and Eve. Do you think that Eve can become Adam. What if the woman has gain all the qualities of man possess, will not she would be fearful, and loses her sensitivity and beauty. This fearful, strong, and powerful side belongs to men. While women is only for parenting for the children. At least this is all that I have been able to observe thus far.

This will be the second for Simone Weil

What man was simultanously praised by those that fought with each other? Pope John XXII, Pope Paul VI were influenced by her as was Leon Trotsky who she was highly regarded by when she was in the Communist party.

People that she influenced were from all walks of life. T.S.Eliot wrote:

Malcolm Muggeridge wrote:

Albert Camus wrote in a letter to Weil’s mother in 1951:

Her elder brother Andre Weil, the famous mathematician in a 1932 letter wrote:

Director of Career Placement, Ecole Normale Supérieure seems to verify her brother’s observation:

The Police Commissioner of Le Puy to the Prefect in a 1932 report to the Prefect wrote:

So beginning as a supreme pain in the ass, she developed herself into someone that transcends labels and becomes one of the few that defy classification so as to become for example, from a highly regarded member of the communist Party to the “Patron Saint of Outsiders.” preferring to remain outside Church hypocrisy than join it. Yet, as she explains, it is without contradiction.

If it weren’t for the fact that she was a woman, it would be right to say that here was a philosopher with “balls.”

I like this piece which also states women perhaps will never be able be treated very seriously nor great. I feel sorry for the women who are majoring in philosophy.
Which makes me wonder, if men were to major in nursing it would be the greatest insult for them. Then again may not, because they overcame the power of pride , or was it dignity.

So to be great a woman must become a man? A fancy for transexuals, eh?

On a serious note, I think you need a girlfriend. You are past due.

Then you probably need to read a few of the writers mentioned, and look up the Ecriture Feminine and poststructuralist feminism in particular (since they’re the bits that most interest me)
