for anyone who has been following the offcial post a picture of yourself forum lately, a fair amount of tiem has been spent discussing my geekdom/nerdiness. Well i really felt it should be moved so here it is, the official is sara a geek topic.
Asied from that very important question, I would also like to continue the themes that arose from thsi discussion, which resulted in two main questions.
Firstly what is the difference between nerds and geeks?
secondly what are nerd criterion? (or geek criterion)
firstly ya spelt my name wrong
secondly, ah if only it were that simple, but what is a geek, what is a nerd, whats the difference?
why do i qualify?
are youa nerd, a geek?
To be a nerd/ geek you would have to wear a pocket protector. And frankly I donāt see where you could even possibly wear one dressed like that. Also your dress disqualifies you as geek material, a Geek is a horrifically dressed nerd , they are more selfcentered in the interests they have, then a nerd. A nerd steps into the real world once in a while. While geeks tend to stay locked up with their nerd /geek interests.
That would of course depend upon your age and what your friends wear.
I donāt think you really have much to worry about. I wear bluejeans own one maybe two dresses that apparently I bought for funereals and weddings since that seems to be the only time I go somewhere that requires a dress. You got a few wolf howls here so let that tell you.
I own maybe 4 ball dresses, and maybe another 12 dresses on top of that, i like dressesā¦ and shoes hmm.
fashion diva
but i like jeans too
iām 18 in just over a week, and my friends wear pretty much the same stuff as me, jeans casually dresses if theres something going on
i think nerds and geeks are defined within the social they are part of. Meaning if a supposed nerd/geek was with a whole bunch of other nerds/geeks at some convention or something, then they would just be normal. But if they are at school or something amongst ānormalā people then they may be considered nerds/geeks based on that societies views.
One thing i do notice about the classic nerd/geek is that they usually tend to be introverted.
P.S. Sara your not a nerd/geek because you like debating! and debating is cool
now now, donāt go complicating the issue, lol, iām not sure i can cope with having to define a dork as well
this for me hit the nail on the head, its pretty much what i said in the previous thread, GCT said I was making a fatal flaw by asking other people to define nerds and geeks, and I said that in my opinion a nerd or a geek was a nerd or a geek because of how other people saw them. I wasnāt convinced nerdiness or geekiness was objective but thought that instead it depended on what other people thought. So i figured the best way to find out if I was one, was to find out other peoples criteria and then see if I fit it.
why thank you, i was debating captain at school, does that not make me super-cool??
or maybe just a āmaster-debaterā sorry, sorry, had to be doneā¦
can you not be simultaneously cool and a geek/nerd then? or is it the wrong type of cool?
Generally speaking the nerd and the geek are quite similiar although there are a few characteristics that are exclusive to one or the other. I will examine briefly some of the major differences between the geek and the nerd, namely the personality type and social status.
In almost all cases a nerd is exceedingly intelligent, well mannered, conservatively dressed, polite and respectful, and normally unathletic.
A geek can sometimes be average to normal intelligence, eccentric, liberally dressed, rude and/or obnoxious, and slightly athletic.
A nerd is usually sexually implicit and is somewhat shy or introverted in social relationships that do not directly involve his type. However, when the female nerd meets the male nerd, or vice-versa, there is a certain magic unique to only nerdology that organizes their mating habits. Other than that the nerd in public will be withdrawn if he can help it, being neither flashy or physically admirable.
The geek is quite the opposite. In social relationships what fails him is often his excessive effort to fit in-- he is like the nerd who wanted to go jock or thug, for example. His personality is therefore often abtrusive and he comes across as clumsy. Sexual relationships for geeks is a little more awkward than those of the nerds, and mating habits between them are often random and with no real foundation. Geeks also remain virgins longer than nerds do.
Another thing that is interesting is this. Nerds donāt try to be fashion concious and tend to steer away from loud and popular life styles, while geeks try to assimilate those things.
You can think of the geek as āthe nerd who tried to be cool and failed miserably.ā
I personally have a deep admiration for nerds. I believe they are what Zarathustra meant when he spoke about the overmen.
