New study proves antidepressants are usesless

Prozac, used by 40m people, does not work say scientists

Analysis of unseen trials and other data concludes it is no better than placebo

see the medical journal
medicine.plosjournals.org/perlse … 50045&ct=1
What it means is 40 million people just talked them selves out of depression solely on the authority of their doctors telling them the antidepressent work
what does that say for the power of authority and people believing authority figures

and what does it say for the power of the mind

Reported.

Prozac is addictive as far as I know. I’ve seen the reactions when someone has trouble obtaining a prescription or running-out.

The funny thing about your title…is it implies all anti-depressants are useless and that’s just not true.

the study is about new-generation antidepressant medication-which are uselss

Hahaha, I’d go with soma

They already make somas, carisiprodol I think is the generic name. They’re pretty good muscle relaxers. Better than valium imho.

Why on earth would drug manufacturers name their product after something depicted as a form of social control in futuristic fiction novel? When I think “Soma”, it carries with it negative connotations.

A gram is better than a damn!

Anyone who thinks antidepressants are worthless obviously doesn’t know any manic-depressants.

Delicious irony, in the melodramatic “I explain my world-domination plot aloud and then cackle maniacly” evil-genius sort of way.

I think the word “soma” has a history outside of Brave New World.

I think it was some drug concoction(of what I’m not sure) with hallucinogenic properties in India hundreds(thousands?) of years back.

SSRI’s are not recommended for bi-polar disorder because they precipitate exaggerated manic states.

Quite. That happened to a friend of mine who was misdiagnosed with depression when he was bi-polar. He went on being manic for about a month before they reevaluated him. But there are different combinations of drugs that you can use to treat it, and there are some types of antidepressants that work in combination with other drugs.

I knew this girl on prozac who acted really weird. She was slow to reaction and really emotional, as in, she always looked like she was about to cry. She hardly moved or talked and never laughed. Her smiles were fake.

I don’t know if that was due to the medication itself, or if it wasn’t working and she was normally that way.

And this is why you are supposed to consult several Doctors not just one and not ones that share the same office. You should also listen to the commercials thoroughly before you run out and tell your doctor you want that drug. Geez, the side affects cause more problems than the disease. Do you really have that many depressing times that you would risk getting even more ill or dead? Its pretty bad when the drug causes more problems then what it cures. peoples is stoopid.

Most anti-depressents have side effects such as “Thoughts of suicide.”

I used to think they just put that on there so that if the medication didn’t work, it was ok…they listed that as a side effect.

 legally sort of yea, but, think about it, they have to list side effects that occur in a specific percentage of humans right? Well lets say one side effect will occur in 5% of the population. Now think about multiple side effects. Each occuring in 5% or less than 5% of the population? So you end up with a pill that can affect 50% of the population adversely given the lists of some of these drugs. Its probably less than 50% probably more like 20 or 10% or varies here and there, but, still, look at the odds that one of those side effects is going to happen to you… And folks just run right out and say give me drugs…

I know know some people that have actually for convienence sake make appointments with their Doctor’s partners in order to get a second opinion or to not piss off their primary Doctor. :astonished:  yep peoples is stoopid. I am very grateful that I am a very curious person,um, meaning I get curious about knowledge not curious as in strange, Ok maybe that too.
