NIH authorizes use of first human embryonic stem cells

Obama administration approves the first human embryonic stem cells for experiments by federally funded scientists under a new policy designed to dramatically expand government support for one of the most promising but also most contentious fields of biomedical research.

About bloody time too.

They have already used ESC to cure cancer in Scotland, skin cancer IIRC.

NHS.

About time NIH got with the programme we always expect the most from US scientists, because they have the best funding and probably the most scientists per capita.

HSCR is fine and so is ASCR but if ESCR works better then theirs is only a religious reasoning to say we shouldn’t use it and frankly an embryo is not a person and using them is not murder! :unamused:

Stem cells have miraculous potential. While I am not a fan of abortion I see no problem with taking recently fertilized and undifferentiated embryonic cells that otherwise are not going to be implanted for pregnancy and using them for research. I think at some point in fetus development, where differentiation has taken place and separate biological systems have developed and become energized, harming the developing fetus is ethically wrong - or at least, certainly ethically questionable.

But stem cells mean undifferentiated cells, they have not modified into separate functional cells yet. There is no living entity to speak of. There is no ‘soul’ and no consciousness attached to a blastocyst - at least we have no reason to think that there is, and good reason to think that there is not.

You can now clone ESCRs and re-implant the original so the objections seem even more trite.

If embryonic stem cells become a ‘cure-it-all’ then I can’t see the masses complaining about the ethics of it, as wouldn’t it then become unethical not to cure some-one’s ills in this way…

Stem cells over chemo… any day - that stuff is literally poison!

But there is disadvantages to this issue!!! Stem cells collected from leukemia embryo will later cause problems.
