This is going to be a rather simplistic argument as again I have no time to write it.
At cirtain stages in life people can become stuck at a stage in life, normally not at fault of the person but rather due to some emotionally disruptive event.
It dawned on me that most people go through a rebelious phase, (I cirtainly did) and that this phase does seem very similar in alot of respects to nihilism. Could it be so simple that nihilism is simply due to poor emotional development; being stuck in this final stage of life before progressing to an adult mentality.
some people define it as a pre-frontal lobe seizure.
personally i would describe the environment of the nihilist consisting of inadequate delusions to maintain what some might call a blissful ignorance.
certainly you cannot argue with a nihilist or attempt to prove them immature as their position is in truth the most rational.
on what grounds you will surely ask.
nihilism requires little, but you could say it requires nothing. without any objective proof, nihilism remains the favorite probability wise.
nihilism is not proven. proof of nihilism would be the absence of objectivity, given that objectivity is a long way from being proven in any respect, nihilism is an attractive gamble.
A microbe in a falling drop of water will never know what is the purpose. It can not see the big picture. It errantly reaches the conclusions- there is no purpose.
Nihilistic thoughts and philosophies, it seems, go hand in hand with disturbed mental states and depression, where agents often lack the capacity to be rational/logical. The deviant nature of the belief system also lends itself to young people filled with angst towards society/their parents/whatever. It’s no wonder that it’s a philosophy that’s not widely held in academic circles or with the “great minds” of our time.
If the “immature” are unable to overcome suffering then they must be allowed to self-destruct.
I have no pity for Aidan; he has got himself into this desolate philosophy and no-one but him may get him out of it; no matter how many well meaning little twerps start calling him “immature” …
hmmmmmmmm… i don’t like to think of myself as a twerp.
what is stumbling musn’t be pushed, and though the immature must be allowed to self destruct, it is best not to encourage them as they may grow out of it as the condition suggests.
infact it could be worth while to help them don’t you think? if i could save a life, wouldn’t that mean for something? even if simply sentimental? the ultimate comfort? the ultimate chemically pleasing reaction within my brain?.. i don’t think i can go any more deterministic than that for any would be nihilists.)
the difference between you and i is that of pessimism and optimism
What is stumbling must be pushed; so that it may learn to stand under its own power - or fall into oblivion.
If Aidan can overcome this, then he will be a greater man than any here. But you must be wary of handing to him the crutch of your pity; he must be permitted to stand, alone. Ruthlessness is necessary here.
Not particularily, but thats a whole different subject.
Were Aidan honest from the very heart, he would be dead long ago. Yet he comes on here with his attention seeking, his ad homs and his claims of secret knowledge, looking for an audience.
Consequently, the conclusion must be drawn that he derives satisfaction from such performances and the pity and earnest solicitations he receives from such as you.
Forget him. Let him fall, or leave him be; to learn to stand again.
“'Pity! Pity for the Higher Man!’ he cried out, and his countenance was transformed into brass. 'Very well! That - has had its time!
‘My suffering and my pity - what of them! For do I aspire after happiness? I aspire after my work!’”
