I don’t know how much it has to do with the gays, necessarily. There are plenty of people who are not gay that have AIDS.
Africa is the number one continent for AIDS, I’m pretty sure it’s like 1/4 there. Maybe he’s trying to appeal to his African-American fan base?
You guys do realize that this ban meant not just that you couldn’t become a citizen of USA, but that you could not enter USA period if you have AIDS. It is an extremely bizarre and archaic law that various people have attempted to repeal over the years including George Bush. Infact GWB started the process that Obama is now finishing. Meanwhile Americans with AIDS could not risk leaving the country, journalists and politicians with AIDS could not enter it, and the stereotype that everyone with AIDS is some sort of sexual deviant who is so animalistic that they cannot help but fuck people to death was maintained.
Do continue to babble about whatever preposterous reasons pop into your head, though. We are all just so fascinated about your stereotypes, fearmongering, and general disregard for anything but inherited gutteral reaction.

I don’t see the need to repeal the whole thing, is my point. I can see allowing American citizens back in, hell, they are our citizens. I just don’t see the need for letting someone in that has AIDS when they are not a citizen of the country to begin with, so I disagree in part to this whole thing being repealed.
The fact is the right to enter the country if you have AIDS and are not a citizen is included, and I am not really a fan of that.
I do recall something about Bush trying to get this repealed, but considering I am a Socialist, it would be tough to claim that I am trying to draw any party lines here.

It’s just a disease, if you are responsible it would take a miracle for you to contract it even if you lived with someone who had it. Meanwhile you propose policies that keep it a dirty little secret surrounded in stigma and mystery, and inadvertently ensure it’s spread and growth due to ignorance, fear and lack of awareness. Seriously, what possible reason could there be to ban journalists, students, and tourists from coming here because they have it. Not to mention that AIDS in poor country = death sentence while AIDS in America = likely to make it to twilight years.

I don’t think that AIDS is a dirty little secret, we were pretty well-educated about AIDS throughout school and I know that I can shake the hand of a person with AIDS and not get it, hell, I could even french kiss such a person.
The reason to ban such a person from coming into the country if they have AIDS is that some people with AIDS will have sex with people and not tell the other person they have AIDS. Then, the other person gets AIDS.
That does not happen very often, in fact, I would say that it is probably quite rare. It has happened, though, and there is not a reason, in my opinion, for such a risk to be taken when there isn’t any real benefit.
That was more of an off-color (no pun intended) joke than anything because Impenitent said that he was doing it to appeal to San Francisco. I figured that if I was going to throw something out there that out of character for me I might as well back it up with some kind of statistic. (1/4 of Africa’s Population with AIDS)
In reality, he has no reason to appeal to the African-Americans because he already does. He received a full 96% of their votes and his approval rating amongst African-Americans has never fallen below 90% for any given week and averages 93%. (1)
So, it was just a joke built off of Impenitent’s joke about the San Francisco fan base. Of course, he probably was doing it to appeal to liberals, in general. Of course, himself being a liberal, it sort of makes sense that he would do things that appeal to liberals.
I had a friend who was deported a few months ago when he tested positive for HIV. We were all really surprised that the US would have such a law. Too bad it hadn’t been changed a little sooner.
