Modern presidents have been giving addresses to school children just like this one, Republicans and Democrats alike. And you can always find some group who disagrees with what a public figure is doing. So the question is why the media decided to latch onto this particular one. Are they looking for rancor? To what extent does the media reflect the news vs create the news?

Doesn’t exactly make me feel warm and fuzzy. If anything, it sounds like just another liberal elitist making excuses for their ongoing failure to make America the society of equal opportunity that it claims to be.

“Ignore those teachers, shut out your parents, grandparents and other adults, and coast your way to failure.”
“If you quit on school you’re doing your country a favor.”
“The circumstances of your life are a good excuse for not trying.”
“Whatever you decide to do, other people owe it to you to make it happen”

Some of the negative reaction to Obama’s speech may be backlash against Obama campaign’s calculated ambiguity strategy.
Congratulations, when faced with criticism of what you believe you’ve resorted to the easy strawman diversion tactic. I’m sure Obama’s psychological propaganda operatives are extremely proud of you. Well, proud of themselves for having encouraged the public to respond to criticisms of Obama with such ludicrous ideological strategies.
Tell me why it is you love your president to the extent you’re willing to do foolish things in his defence. I really don’t get it. It’s just like the Bush supporters. Just like it.

In my opinion, you have misread both Obama’s advise and my response to your comments. I opined that Obama’s was good advise you think it bad. My response to yours was meant to be humorous, hence the smiley. No offence intended.
Those who disagree with Obama’s politics are suspicious of his motives for speaking to school children, no doubt. So even if his advise is the same as they might give themselves, they resent it. That’s what I see of the matter at this point.
I haven’t misread Obama’s advice, or rather, you saying I have is hopelessly arrogant on your part. Offence intended.
You’d be wrong, at least as far as I’m concerned. I am not suspicious of his motives, I think what he’s saying is untrue, misleading, or damaging. Not to mention somewhat contrary to his socialising of healthcare.

In response to your feeble attempt to reduce my objections to Obama’s ‘advice’ to a matter of psychology (suspicion of his motives) my goal was to offend you.
He seems to be telling people they are entirely responsible for their own success or failure, while seeking to employ a socialist healthcare system which alleviates people’s responsibility for their own healthcare.
Just like the UK after WW2 it makes no sense for a bankrupt country to embark upon an immensely costly nationalised healthcare system, unless the stated reasons for that policy are not the real ones. Hence the contradictions in Obama’s propaganda.
My “attempts” were directed at understanding the public reaction of a small group of people who werre protesting the president’s speech to school children. They weren’t directed at you. But from what I read, Obama did pretty well academically. His advice to school children is to do what pretty much what he did.
The medical insurance system in this country is broken. Whether a new system is legislated and whether it will be better than we now have remains to be seen. It certainly makes sense to try and improve the sytem. There are a wide range of opinions about what would work best.
Getting more people invested in the health insurance system may make good economic sense depending on how the system is designed. We are already paying for many of the poorest people via Medicare and Medicaid. Treating indigent people in Emergency Rooms is often far more expensive than it would be in appropriate settings and it is ineffective to boot. Tax payers end up picking up the tab for people who elect to opt out of the existing system. Others who have health insurance can go broke because of gaps in their coverage. People lose their health insurance when they get laid off. Others who have health insurance lose it when they get sick. Truely sick people who are unable to work are hardly in a position to shoulder responsibility for paying for their own health insurance premiums. Catch 22 is written into current health insurance policies. That’s why their CEOs have gotten so rich off them.
