Oblivion can only be infinitessimal- Mathematical proof?

A simple math trick implies that the cosmos insists on an infinitessimality to equal oblivion. Here I explain.

You may be familiar with this trick.

Repeating decimal 9 = 1. Why?

Suppose repeating decimal 9 = x.

10x - x = 9x

10x = 9.99-

x = 0.99-

(9.99- - 0.99- = 9)

therefore 9x = 9

IF (ax=a) THEN (x=1), therefore x = 1.

0.99- = 1

But then 1 - 0.99- = 1/infinity

1/Infinity = 0, and 0 = 1/infinity

So then there can never really be oblivion, can there?

First of all, this shouldn’t be in the philosophy forum but the natural sciences but anyways…

How do you figure?

Sorry about the bad thread placement.

1 - 0.999- = the smallest possible fraction, doesn’t it? What else could you subtract from 1 to squeeze out more other than 1?

1/infinity is also the smallest possible fraction.

So the above binomial and the above fraction are both the same, aren’t they? They both work to attain the absolute minimum possible. But it’s difficult to see either of them as zero.

I admit this feels like a meaningless chase. :unamused:

You’re disproving yourself.

You said,

Therefore the follow is invalid

If 0.99- = 1

then 1- 0.99- = 0

That’s because, as mentioned by my assumption: 1/infinity = zero. I’m simply expressing it in different terms- in order to illustrate how they come to the same conclusion.

I don’t think that I’m creating a contradiction if you can agree that 1/infinity = zero. I’m mostly saying that if this doesn’t make sense to you, then either I need to find the flaw in my math (mainly from a textbook, btw) or maybe I’m making the mistake of using solid numbers to literally express anything in reality.

For those of you geniouses out there that may find it sad, please forgive me for chasing my own tail.

No, 1/infinity does not equal zero. Mathematical operators can only be used on real numbers. Infinity is a concept, not a number. Saying that 1/infinity = 0 is meaningless. It’s like saying “infinity + 1” which makes no sense. The only time infinity can be used with operators is when referring to limits or advanced calculus topics.

Yeah, using math to describe reality will get you nowhere. Have you seen the movie “Pi”? If you think about numbers too much, you’ll go insane.

I think spw317 is just kidding about the insanity bit, but his point is still valid.

The number line is a human abstraction, not a microcosm of the universe.

Let’s pretend the above statement is false…

Infinity, by the way you use it, is a huge number stretching toward, well, infinity

If it stretches toward infinity, it illustrates a never-endingness

If number line behavior is sufficient to draw conclusions about the universe from, then we establish, by the above assumptions, that the universe IS infinite.

I’m not sure if I reasoned this refutation out correctly, so feel free to review it with a fine-toothed comb.
Also, are you using oblivion correctly? I can’t find a definition of it that suits your usage
