ocd is obsessive compulsive disorder if you dont know. and probably very few of the people on this forum are. but we’re all obsessive compulsive about something. so what is it?
i’ll kick it off
-i can’t have my toothbrush touching anyone else’s toothbrush
-if i pop one knuckle, i have to pop all of them.
-and i can’t stand having water (or anything) anywhere around my eyes.
Back when I had my hair (see pic post) I actually did have ocd… I could NOT stop twisting it. I would do it when people were talking to me… almost in my sleep. It was ridiculous… and part of the reason why I shaved it off.
People touching my food… especially if they take it and eat some of it. This girl in my 8th grade class took like 4 of my chicken nuggets at lunch once and I yelled and called her a stupid fatass bitch and told her to eat her own fucking food or go to hell.
Looking back now, I might have overreacted. But it still pisses me off. My friends are so obnoixous! They always fucking throw things at each other at lunch, but they just grab whatever’s closest. It pisses me off so much when they grab my food and throw it at each other. I already cursed one of my friends out for that and almost beat him up, too. I didn’t really get in any trouble though. He was worse though, because he yelled in my ear when I had a headache then asked why I got mad (he was genuinely confused, too, he’s weird like that sometimes, but he’s not that dumb).
i did have OCD once, and literally, not like gobbo’s air twisting…it was creepy and terrible and i have posted numerous opinions in the psychology forums, so many thin fact, that i am weary of going through it. I got out of it later, without the use of medications (YAY). but i do beleive that everyone has a bit of it when they are under deep stress…take that as you will…
i will, however answer any specific questions that you may have…
well it’s not a specifying kind of thing. i’m just saying not everyone has ocd (meaning not everyone has that scrict way of doing things) but everyone does have one or two things that have to be a certain way. and i figured i’d make a thread out of it because they’re usually weird.
I’ve little or no time for such tags, but in the name of Babble I’ll mention that David Beckham (England football team captain, Real Madrid galatico and sex symbol) is apparently OCD in that he insists on there being an even number of food items in the fridge. According to reports I read a year or so ago he gets in a hissy fit if there is (for example) 3 cans of Pepsi instead of 4, or only one cucumber…
Must be a barrel of laughs in that house:
“Brooklyn, I’ve told you before that if you do want a Pepsi that you must drink 2 at once, you know what your dad’s like!”
nah, they just scratch my neck and bug the crap out of me
i’ve read somewhere that ripping the tags out of shirts is a sign of add. is that true? i mean yeah, i am add, but i didn’t know the two were connected
Creation… popping your knuckles is ocd - i see what you are talking about… I do that as well…
I think to have OCD you have to be so compulsive about something that it disrupts your life… Like if I have one of anything I want all of that thing… one is no good… I will go to all extremes to obtain whatever it is I am looking for…
I don’t think ripping the tags out is ocd… I would consider the tag to be a pet peeve…
but I would like to ask… better than what are you OCD about? Why are we OCD… Why is it that we feel that we must complete something a certain number of times… what is it that tells us that one is not enough? Can you just talk yourself out of OCD? I have tried… It is a feeling I get inside… I feel incomplete until I get all of something…
Yeah OCD is something that causes you and others of suffer. However, the term has become a general way of discussing wacky habits.
One idea about it is that it acts as a mini-version of the religious, and the like, rituals that are performed by humans. We are concerned about the rain. One time I walked around the fire three times and then it started raining. Let’s do it again. OK, it didn’t work. Well, I will walk around another three times. Soon these guys have the whole tribe dancing around the fire for days. Then by chance it rains. They believe that their ritual has done something. What it has done is create and then discharge anxiety.
A lot of OCD problems have to do with anxiety, created by the person, and then discharged by them. Much like the rain situation the OCD person operates on a false assumptions.
On a lighter note, having little quirks can be a delightful aspect of the individual that you are. So, think about whether or not you are sick or just a unique person.
that’s why i made the point at the beginning of saying that few people are actually ocd, but we all have obsessive compulsive traits. they’re different things.
I would be willing to bet that ILP has a higher than average percentage of people with OCD/ADD/ADHD/Bipolar and other psychological disorders.
I agree with siatd about being averse to tags. I can’t sleep on one side too long because i feel unbalanced so have to swap over to my other side. My housemate has to eat everything on his plate in order, he can’t have a bit of potato and then some chicken. We both are not diagnosed with OCD but seemingly is a mild form of it. It’s all a case of degrees, and this thread is a good indicator of that.
The fact that ILP attracts ‘crazies’ is another matter
