There’s not really much to say here. The Catholic church has proven itself to be completely hypocritical already, this situation just highlights that again.
You have it backwards.
The hospital is calling pro-choice advocates out and testing the courts. Either the courts establish a pro-life precedent in charging the hospital, or they uphold a pro-choice precedent and let the hospital go.
If I was a pro-choice advocate, my first concern would be conspiracy. It’s very well possible that the hospital is prepared to pay damages, but wants to see if it can influence public policy as a bonus.
That was my thought reading it as well.
I really can’t argue with that. It makes sense to me, and you could be completely correct.
However, upon discussing this with a friend, it was brought to my attention that it is unlikely that the Catholic church would be willing to pay anything they didn’t have to pay, as they are in dire financial straits.
I have no knowledge of this because, aside from attention-grabbing issues like this one, I don’t pay any mind to those crazy Catholics.

Catholic health is doing whatsoever it needs to do to win the case and keep their money thus contradicting their own principles. They want it both ways or whatever way they can get away with it it. If they win on those grounds it constitutes no victory for Pro-life. I agree with the OP.
The Church is trying to get man out of the business of Joyful Killing. Killing people in war, infanticide, executions of criminals, lethal eugenics… it’s it’s top priorities right now, same as stopping human sacrifice once was in temples. We’re a religion who in it’s earliest roots experienced Martyrdom, a general desire for people not to treat others as our Messiah was mistreated is a natural and enevitable consequence.
Just stop killing. And stop taking joy in the arguments supporting the slayings. We wouldn’t tolerate people performing the exact same procedures on unwanted members of society that are fully grown, despite the claims of dependency they might hold for us.
Honestly… analyse any given reply to ‘abortions are necessary’. At it’s root is a empassioned case for rights and wrongs of desires- a abstracted potential, overlapping at the expense of HUMAN LIFE ITSELF. Is there a stoic, restrained- accidental argument that can be pushed forth as to how it’s coincidentally important to kill people for the sake of not killing people in greater magnitude? Yes- Just War Theory and the Laws of War have tried to effect the calculas of long experience. But then your left with… well, the absurdity that is war and killing. We still can’t justify even a ethical examination of surgical killing.
We support medicine, research… it’s not that stem cells are not allowed, but those taken from willful abortions, a willing death for a cause that is neither Life nor God in it’s end. A better quality life at the cost of the extinguishment of a lesser valued human life, full of unknown potential? No… it’s not our way, nor is it rational when it’s logical, or logical when it’s rational. It demands a emotional impulse that contradicts… it contradicts on the act of killing. ‘I AM WORTH MORE THAN OTHERS’.
The most important task for a christian or a philosopher is to come to terms with this cult of death, with the Metaphysics of Violence, and come to terms with it’s most intimate, difficult points. The goal is no more killing, to break down the enthusiams for it, the joys in acclaiming it and following through with it. To find the worth in life though life- a experience of our potential in every waking moment- through our striving and committment to men, life not needing justification, accepted for it’s own worth, brought to it’s conclusion in the fullness our spirit allows, never needing to take prisoner nor take another’s blood.
I denounce all enthusism for death. I don’t take a Hitlerian stance on the benifits and ethical considerations for aborting unworthy fetus or killing retarded children anymore than i accept his authority as a Nietzschean Artist to produce wonderful art. A ugly mind, in the end of it’s fulfillment, can only produce ugliness. I have too much of John Ruskin in me I suppose. I see the aesthetic without as a component to the ethical within. ABORTION IS THE UGLIEST THING. In cases of triage, either or… then it’s either or, as the goal is to save someone. When it’s not a either or, don’t kill. If there was ever a acceptable end to all our evaluations to theorizing on death, it was trying to drag out the either-or scenerio out of the depths of the chaos men historically wroght on one another. In the end, it’s a shadowy affirmation of the value of life in some shape or form. We’re in a position in these modern times to come out of the shadows and embrace life to it’s fullest. None of us have any excuses anymore. What past is past, but from now on… stop the culture of murder. Embrace the means to valuating others positively, in working together. Just stop the fucking killing.
Are you a Jain and a Vegan? Even for those folks absolute avoidance of killing is impossible. Difficult choices must be made. Killing an unconscious organism in the womb may be a better choice than a life of conscious suffering. Do you volunteer to care for the institutionalized imbeciles of the world? If not, you are not taking responsibility for the outcome of your morality. Neither you nor I will ever be directly affected. It’s too easy for us to imagine we are taking the high road. Leave the tough choices to the women who are closest to the consequences.
Those that don’t believe in abortion should keep their dicks in their pants. And the last I checked those with a dick don’t have a uterus, and therefore don’t have the right to tell those with a uterus what to do with their own body.

Viewed from the standpoint of absolute morality abortion is wrong. But absolute morality is practiced NOWHERE. Conservatives get this when it comes to every other issue EXCEPT abortion. In every other area they are killing as much if not more than anyone else and justifying it right and left. Apparently they value unborn babies more than anyone else. When it comes to children outside the womb, it’s somebody else’s problem.
