This being my 1900th post, I’d like to commemorate it to Friedrich Nietzsche who died August 25th, 1900.
A simple man of little consequence walked into a bookstore and began browsing around the back end. There he found a tumultuous amount of religious and spiritual publication; New Age, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. (even the latest piece of crap from Sylvia Brown). A whole slew of fiction and fantasy, delusion and mythology. It was simply just fascinating to see so much hogwash in an age of reason and logic; where reality is part of a human being’s keen perception of sight and mind.
The man then made his way further, around the bookshelf to the lamentfully-small philosophy section. His eyes scanned across the rows of classics… Ahh, yes! There were all the greats! Plato, Aristotle, Déscarte, Spinoza, Hume, Diderot, Voltaire, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Derrida, Heidegger, Russell, Wittgenstein, Marx, Sartre, Kierkegaard, and especially Nietzsche! Oh, Nietzsche! Where would we be now without you? How could the evolution of philosophy seem right with you missing from the annals of time?
The man took a brief moment to browse through the collection of books that the bookstore had in stock of Nietzsche’s. Everything seemed there in order… from The Birth of Tragedy to The Will to Power… except… wait a minute… There’s something sticking out of the pages from The Will to Power… The man pulled the book out and removed what appeared to be a little pamphlet that had been inserted by someone not a fan of Nietzsche. That was a fair assessment, as the pamphlet was revealed to be one of those “Get Saved by Jesus” sort of things.
Oh, Nietzsche! How angry would you be at such an insult? Would you fume in a massive intellectual assault on the managers and owners of the bookstore? Or would you play it like a religious person? They obviously didn’t play by your rules, why should you play by theirs? One stone deserves one back, right? But then, you’re beyond good and evil… beyond traditional ethics and morals. Why stoop down to the religious person’s level and put a pamphlet advertising your ideas sticking out of every book regarding the Christian religion?
Oh, Nietzsche! If only you were here today!
The man shook his head in disbelief at how much effort people put into advertising such silly mythology. What a waste of money… money that could be used to improve the educational system, feed the hungry, and improve the overall well-being of the common citizen. No… instead of improving themselves, they’re selling each other short for a fantasy that promises salvation. Why spend time waiting to be saved when you can get off your ass and do it now? Save yourself and improve society by improving yourself.
The man left the bookstore and continued living life in the moment.
