OK?

We all use the term OK, or Okay, on a routine basis, and we all know what it means. For those who might not, Wiki says:

But where did OK (or Okay) come from? Who invented the word or the abbreviation?

Not that it makes a damn bit of difference, just curiosity…

Shucks. I was hoping it had an origin a little more romantic than Van Buren. :unamused: Or Woodrow Wilson? Geeze.

i can think up many fun words…

“Howdy”

“Diabolical”

“Confusing”

P.S…

“P.S”

from time to time i stumble across words and discern their origins from other words that i know.

take bonfire for a simple example “a fire of bones”

or breakfast “breaking your morning fast.” Fast meaning not eating during sleep.

“Howdy” is the latest interesting one i came across… not many people know where it comes from when i ask them.

Uh…Ok.

Howdy short for; How do you do?

correct!

there is also another theory that it was westerners making fun of native americans.

for a greeting they said “Hao” along with a wave.

When they tried to say dow do you do they simply couldn’t.

the matter is inconclusive. but it is believed the former is the best explanation.

I lived within spitting distance of a number of Indian Nations in Arizona. I went to school with them, Not once did any one ever say Hao. Oh course by then Surfing Californians were a big influence, we all raised our hands and said Heeyyyyy. Which translates to “How goes it” which translates to How do you do?

According to Alistair Cooke’s America Series, OK was the initials of Oscar Kramer who accepted the cattle from the drivers when they reached their destination. (I think it was Wichita Kansas). Once he initialed a piece of paper with the number of head of cattle the drivers could cash it anywhere in town. Good as gold.
