Here’s an example of a perspectivist rendering of “opposites”.
What’s a better example of opposition than “up” and “down”?
Take your superdeluxe earth-boring transport machine to the North Pole. Set your course for the South Pole. For half of your journey, you will be traveling downward, and for half, you will be traveling upward. Yet you have not changed direction.
Yet you have.
Spooky, huh?
Opposition is just one possible perspective of a continuum.
How about the idea that separation and distance are basically subjective interpretations of a total unity/oneness? It may be like, the “reality is an illusion” affirmation, from East-India.
In the same way you described a single direction as being supposedly up then down, though it has not “changed”, imagine a universe made out of the same stuff, all the same, and any difference is just a "different "perspective or way of seeing the same old aether?
Yeah, well, to imagine such a Universe, you just have to think about scale or scope, which are, as you know, two tools a perspectivist would commonly use in tandem. At a certain scale, the known universe must surley look like a small varinace in the size of the “clumps of dust”. (Nonpersepctivist’s note - the quotes means it’s a metaphorical and literal statement at once. If I had any self-respect, I wouldn’t have included them.) Just look under sofa, or something. No one can see all the stuff in dust. You can’t even see the mites, which are pretty big.
The Universe might be infinitely big, but it also might be infinitely small.
As I’ve tried to list earlier, an infinitely big ‘something’ -could- still be altered, all at once, by a tiny finite. It’s possible to simultaniously be “small” and “big”, finite and infinite, both at the same time. In-fact, that may be the way that everything is, all the time, always both finite and infinite. If we’re real, and we aren’t separate from reality, that means we are that infinity aswel as those finites. Reality has different ways of looking at itself, but it’s still the same shit, too. The dualitizations of finite and infinite, weak and strong, influencial and non-influential, are probably the only differences between “true” and “false”, because false is not real, therefor it cannot ever exist…
What if the magnetic field switches like scientists hypothesize as they have said at least 5 times already right in the middle of your journey? Does that mean earth flips it’s axis or the magnetic field itself? Have you still changed direction or not?
I don’t see how your direction changes. the force of gravity might pull you in an oposite direction at a certain point but your direction of travel doesn’t change.
If the earth flips, nothing changes. That doesn’t change up and down, only north and south.
By the way, stand on the North Pole. Travel east for ten miles. Where are you?
Just a pop quiz for your entertainment pleasure.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter, does it? You are both changing diretction and not. What else do you want to do on the journey? Isn’t that enough, up and down-wise? And besides, you could always trun around in the middle.
If you travel 1 micron from true north, you have developed your N,E,S,W direction again. Any direction you go from the North Pole takes you south. Now, if you are talking magnetic north…well that’s another story.
Trick question, folks: there’s only south when you’re standing at the north pole. There’s no ‘east pole’ or ‘west pole’ to measure towards.
Like you guys just said, every direction is the same direction: south.
Anyway:
It’s definitional. Your direction as a vector does not change from the perspective of the north pole as you travel through the center of the erath. However, as humans we generally define up and down as the direction that travels against the pull of gravity and down as the direction that travels with the pull of gravity. On the first half of your journey, the earth pulls you in the direction you’re heading, so you’re going down. On the second half of your journey, you work against gravity, so you’re going up.
It was not easy for humanity to invent absolutes. For that I am sure, because an absolute is so rare, it’s like it’s not even here. To “lie” in a true world, to be unreal in a completely real reality, THAT was not an easy task at all. That must have been one of the most difficult struggles we can imagine, to get up to this strange point of ‘unreal’, whilst also being real.
