I’m gonna start posting some videos here that I enjoy, by people with very obvious (to me, anyway) natural talent. It’s not necessarily about the lyrics, or the genre, but about the musicality of these artists, dig? So critique all you like, but at the end of the day, talent is talent, no matter what form it is presented in. To start off, a cover of a song by Sublime, my favorite band. So many people try to cover Sublime and they just fuck it up horribly, but this one is good, hence the posting.
I’m a huge fan of Jason Mraz. I love the laid-back style of his music, but more than that, he’s one of those few musicians out there whose live performances are better than the manipulated shit they put on the albums. He can’t even help it, music just flows through him – and can’t forget Toca, the dude on the drum. Toca is the man.
I found Ana Free on youtube a couple years ago, listened to some of the covers she did and thought she was pretty good. Then I found this one, it’s an Ana Free original, and I fell in love with it.
System of a Down – gaaaahhhhdddd – opera rock/metal. They’re just fantastic. Just…listen. Listen to everything, the guitar, the drums, the vocals, the lyrics.
And one more. The album this song belongs to was not the best, but this song is wonderful, despite the fact that the asshole backup singer felt he NEEDED to sing more lead vocals.
Serj, the former lead singer of System of a Down. I am so absolutely in love with this man’s voice, but it’s more than that. The man has something to say, and he does so with his music like millions before him, but…there’s just something about it, about HIM.
Kross - that’s talent We’re agreed. Check out a couple of my fave’s –
You gotta watch the whole thing, or you’ll miss the best part. He starts GOING OFF about halfway through, this guy is nuts. At around 4:15, he stacks the beat and the chorus. CRAAAAZYYYYY

Human beatbox – “C’mon stud!” This kid is amazing. I think he was the beatbox world champion for at least two years in a row.
At around 4:15, he stacks the beat and the chorus. CRAAAAZYYYYY
Unbelievable I just don’t know how they do that.
Being me I’m into the slightly freakier end of same!
jamie Lidell does something similar but “cheats” a wee bit by samplin’ on the fly - still he can set up a whole soul orchestra in seconds! Also a great great voice whether doing male or female parts!
A dutch writer was saying on tv the other day that he thought everybody has a supreme talent, but most of the fields people have talents for haven’t been invented.
Here’s a new one anyway:
In your case, kp, that is not an issue. But the idea of perceptible made me think … maybe some talents are imperceptible and, who knows, the most valuable.
Jakob - that second video is very David Bowie-esque very cool
jonquil, dear, if you’d like to discuss that perhaps you could create a thread elsewhere to do so. I’d prefer to keep things here focused around posting videos and commenting on those videos.
Krossie - just experimenting with tools can bring to light surprising possibilities.
This guy is, I would say, talented in a way the creator of his instrument didn’t anticipate.
Thanks for those both excellent - particularly liked the flute/beat box combo.
I have heard it said before that one way to get very good at music is to just concentrate on a limited set of tools/software what ever and work them to the absolute max.
Using things in unanticipated ways always makes for a lovely aesthetic shock - OK this is off the music topic but certainly some sort of ultra nerd talent.
Also conforms to Wilde’s - all art is ultimately useless!
I like the idea of redoing something that works perfectly in a much less efficient but more entertaining way…
