I think this is a different topic or question than the one posted by “The Morning Star”.
Ive struggled with it in my mind and was curious if anyone on ILP had any insight to impart on the subject.
I question whether other dimensions actually exist or if they are fanciful ideas of Mathematicians and Physicists. Try as I might I can’t visualize such a thing as the “First or Second dimension”. Sure, a dot on a paper is geometrical representation of the first dimension, however if you shrink down to the size of the dot, you see it has third dimensional properties. The lead is made up of molecules and atoms and electrons.
You would think that in a Three Dimensional Universe it would contain all the dynamics of the first two dimensions. The flaw in my thinking here may well be, that 3D is somehow a “Higher” dimension, where as they they may be altogether separate dimensions-unconnected. This seems illogical (of course some physics is illogical yet true- as I understand it-not being much educated on the subject).
My son had an interesting concept about how Light in a 2D universe would behave. Casting light on one end and all else would be dark.
Seem’s to me that there is only a 3D posibility, which by its very nature allows all possibilities in a material universe by extending in all directions from a point. (And uh-oh what is and where is that point-I dont think a single point exists where by “all” is radiated outward).
Call it a fanciful idea if you like, but if you wanna learn how the universe works, such ideas are useful.
3D space is indeed ‘higher’ than the lower dimensions. Points and surfaces can be extracted from 3D space, but 3D space cannot be extracted from 2D or 1D space.
To imagine how things work in 2D space, play an old 2D computer game. There is no surface to either side of the dimension, only left and right, up and down (the X and Y axis). To get the ‘surface’, you must observe it from 3D space (from the Z axis).
However, all this is just an incomplete mathematical model for what real space is like, ie, space that can be bent and folded, and may well have many more dimensions with ‘surfaces’ curled tightly around into subatomic wires. This doesnt invalidate it (its not fanciful), but its not the whole story.
I really appreciate your response. No disrespect was intended about the fanciful idea thing, I understand that the math and physics is supposed to allow up to eleven different dimensions.
After posting this topic I did some search and found the book “Flatland” and read it. The occupants of flatland still seem to be in a 3D reality, since they bump into each other, and that seems to imply that “height” exists in their dimension. They are just unable to move “up”.
Can you explain further to me how a 2D game is not simply a limited use of the 3rd dimension. The light that emanates from the game itself adds a 3rd dimensional quality.
How do you feel about the possibility that thoughts or knowledge or time as the 2nd dimension.
They have a third D quality simply because we see things that way.
Its like in the movie the matrix. They are seeing “green letters” and their using their mind to bend those “letters” to create an image.
You are seeing dots of color and your mind bends to see an image. The designer or the person who placed those dots in an order did so because he was trying to create an image.
Do a search here for Dimensions etc there have been many threads based on those ideas. Some of those discusions i took part of years ago or posed questions myself.
I do hold that other dimensions exist but i can not prove their existance.
I feel for every decision made there is a different dimension for it. In a realm full of possibilities, the possibilities create the realms.
Future Man wrote a couple posts on dimensions a while back (a year or 2) ago that I found really informing…
I forget what they’re called. Search for his old natural sciences posts or just send him a message.
Anyone ever experience a lucid dream? Indeed, why do these (or, our dreams in general) seem to take on a dimension of its own accord?
Next:
I wrote an idea about the multiverse and the evolving biocosm.
The thread is still up and noone is reading it.
I think that true dimensions are actually generations of universes, all set up in a big “stack”.
possibly noone answers because your thread consits of scientific possibility and religous judgment toward the “God” and the “Heavens”?
you probably mean nothing offensive , just soemthing that had crossed your mind and a silent reaction is everyone’s result?
another possibility is , your right about everything you have said ,and everyone else is wrong , thus a negative result is your and our fate?
the timing of your thread was early , we are left to read but have nothing too say toward you.
