Our galaxy is named “Milky Way”.
What about our universe?
I say we call it “Benjamin”.
Benjamin is fine with me. Though you would need to prove that there are mutliple universes of course.
Since when did multiplicity become a requirement to give something a name?
I think a name would only be necessary for identification when it comes to other universes. Otherwise, to me, it is pointless.
But I’m requesting it. The simple thought of fulfilling the wish of an honest child with a pure heart should be enough validate the necessity for giving something a name.
Anyways, I think necessity simply for identification in itself is a sufficient reason.
Isn’t a name a necessary evil at best? As soon as we apply a label to something, we begin the process of whittling it down to fit in a box. We need names because, well, there are lots of us. But it still limits things.
I propose we call our universe “The Universe.” Catchy, huh? 
“The Universe” is more limiting than “Benjamin” because when speaking of multiple universes it can get confusing. “Benjamin” puts a smile on the face of everyone who utters the name.
And only the weak and simple minded whittle things down into a box from names. But weak, simple minded people don’t care about and never contemplate and never need a reason to ever refer to the universe by anything. So it is of no concern.
I suspect only the weak minded would go along with naming it “Benjamin.” 
That is truly stupid. I’ve just always disliked that name.
At any rate, that’s no better than simply calling it “The Universe.” Just what confuses you about the distinction between “the Universe” and your theoretical “multiverse”? You seemed to have them straight just now.
i think a Universe needs to exist prior to you calling it a name, if a Universe does not exist then what exactly are you putting the name to? What exists already has a name; “something”.

We should ask the universe if it already has a name. It does not hurt to be polite to your elders.
There is currently only one thing called “Universe”, calling it Benjamin would take away its identity which is currently totally unique and also describes it. Having said that, Benjamin DOES illicit a grin from nearly all who speak it, and I think anyone talking about the universe, whoops “Benjamin” deserves the grin, so let’s do it. 
hmmm… The universe doesn’t neea name since no one can yet prove that there are other universes, otherwise there’s is no need, quite simply. Now if a Hubble II comes along and finds the expansion of universes, then our own universe could be named, probably not Benjamin. As Phaedrus noted, a name limits something. But the point of a name is to describe something, therefore we ask “what’s unique about our universe?” Well obviously, we don’t know right now 'cause we can only prove that we are the only universe there. Plus, if we discovered more universes, what ‘‘holds’’ them like universes do to galaxies? One solution asks another question.
We wouldn’t want to call our universe “The Universe” because it doesn’t quite signify the universe as ours. It’s not a very personal name. And we can nominally refer to the universe as ours because this is a name that we’re creating for our own use, from our point of view, for our own language.
And anyways, this topic is to explore names. If you dislike Benjamin, you can suggest your own, but I think “The Universe” is a clunky name. And it’s not that it confuses me, but I’m criticizing it in the name of nominal predicates everywhere.
At the least the universe exists as a concept, and the one we’re talking about is a rigidly designated concept that all humans know and love. At the least it’s no worse than calling a certain planet Pluto.
But we can postulate other universes, and at least for this reason we can attribute to our own universe its own name. We can give our universe a name as a precautionary measure just in case we do discover other universes. I don’t know about you, but I’d personally be pretty embarrassed for humankind if we discovered other universes and we didn’t even have our own name to distinguish ourselves.
No way, you should know better than to ever actually ascribe universal meaning to anything 
. We can give our universe a name because I have asked for it. I also think we should give our universe a gender. Some of you may have a problem with this proposal because we don’t yet know if the universe has a universal penis, but nominally speaking the French attribute gender semantics to objects as well.

Wow…now that’s intelligent…maybe you should’ve clarified that earlier.
Forget the French tactics, I don’t think it would be proper to give the universe testicles or ovaries–unless you do believe in ‘‘black holes’’ 
Now… why would you want to give the Universe a gender? Tell me…what gender is Earth? How about Pluto? …is the Moon a daughter/son of the Earth?
Okay…enough with the sarcasm…I think everyone gets my point. Anyways, I’m still sticking to there is no reason to give the Universe a name unless we know of other Universes…so somebody have a fun night and give birth to Hubble II.
Dammit, I wish whoever started to realize we were in a universe first came up with that one… oh wait, they already did!
We do know of other universes. Just not scientifically. But there are modal considerations.
It would be less cumbersome to refer to our own universe when we speak of multiple universes if our universe had a name. Here’s an example:
" ‘The Universe’ is the one universe out of all possible universes where we are known to physically exist."
It gets redundant and when we hear it, it doesn’t clearly make sense. Substituting ‘The Universe’ with ‘Benjamin’ simplifies the challenge of referring to our universe in a sentence using the specific syntactical structure that I’ve exemplified above.
I’d say name it jkfkgjlkgjtk (Why yes, I did just hit a bunch of random keys).
Personally, I think the name ‘the Neverending Story’ fits the universe quite well.

How about, “The-answer-to-all-questions”? Don’t like that idea — then just make it easy for yourselves, and name it after me…
yeah theres no point giving a name to something like the universe if we dont necesarily know if theres more than one, unless one believes pure specualtion
