At a consumption rate of around 85 million barrels of oil per day, you can get through 3 billion barrels quite quickly.
Indeed, from what I’ve been learning, peak oil isn’t really about the amount of oil in the ground, it’s about the flow rates, and the economic dynamics of trying to continue pumping 85 million barrels of oil out of the ground every day when you’ve only got to the point where you can do that because you pumped all the sweet, light crude oil first. Sustaining that output will likely prove impossible without finding a field the size of the one in this article at least a few times a year, and getting it online producing crude oil pretty quickly.
