Most petroleum geologists prefer theories of oil formation, which holds that oil originated in shallow seas as vast quantities of marine plankton or plant materials died and sank into the mud. Under the resulting anaerobic conditions organic compounds remained in a reduced state where anaerobic bacteria converted the lipids (fats, oils and waxes) into a waxy substance called kerogen.

As the source rock was buried deeper, overburden pressure raised temperatures into the oil window, between 80 and 180 °C. Most of the organic compounds degraded into the straight-chain hydrocarbons that comprise most of petroleum. This process is called the generation kitchen.[citation needed] Once crude oil formed, it became very fluid and migrated upward through the rock strata. This process is called oil expulsion. Eventually it was either trapped in an oil reservoir or oil escaped to the surface and was biodegraded by soil bacteria.

Oil buried deeper entered the “gas window” of more than 160 °C and was converted into natural gas by thermal cracking. Thus, theory predicts that no oil will be found below a certain depth, only unassociated gas. At greater depths, even natural gas would be pyrolyzed.

HOUSTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) – BP’s announcement of a new giant oil field in the depths of the U.S. waters of the Gulf of Mexico and a series of other recent major finds offshore are setting the stage for geopolitical shifts in Central and South America but also raising key questions about the future map of world oil supplies, analysts said.

The global oil supply scene in particular is up for a dramatic review after recent finds not only in Latin America but also in Asia, Africa and Greenland and potentially large onshore gas finds in the Netherlands. This is because the finds all but cancel out a lot of recent theorizing about “peak oil” – finite hydrocarbon resources – and expert prognoses that the end is nigh for the world’s oil bonanza.

A BP spokesperson told United Press International the Gulf of Mexico find resulted from the deepest well ever dug into Earth.

The Tiber well in Keathley Canyon block 102, approximately 250 miles southeast of Houston, is in 4,132 feet of water. The well was drilled to a total depth of approximately 35,055 feet and found oil in multiple Lower Tertiary reservoirs.

“This is the deepest well in the world,” she said. “Oil finds in Santos Basin in Brazil are in 2,000 meters (6564 feet) of water with total depths of between 5,000-7,000 meters (16,400-22,960 feet).”

The drilling began more than five months ago and the full extent of the oil reserves is yet to be determined, but BP said it determined the find was a “giant” one because it is seen to be greater than the 2006 Kaskida find in the same geological area, which contains around 3 billion barrels equivalent of oil.

At a consumption rate of around 85 million barrels of oil per day, you can get through 3 billion barrels quite quickly.

Indeed, from what I’ve been learning, peak oil isn’t really about the amount of oil in the ground, it’s about the flow rates, and the economic dynamics of trying to continue pumping 85 million barrels of oil out of the ground every day when you’ve only got to the point where you can do that because you pumped all the sweet, light crude oil first. Sustaining that output will likely prove impossible without finding a field the size of the one in this article at least a few times a year, and getting it online producing crude oil pretty quickly.

I was for a long time a peak oil sceptic but I’m being given a lot of good reasons to think that it isn’t a myth. So many things about our economy are myths but this one might not be…
