Do people disagree with you because they are stupid?

  • Yes, those who disagree with me are stupid.
  • No, those who disagree with me may have reason or be ill informed which does not make them stupid.
  • Sometimes those who disagree with me are stupid.
  • Mostly those who disagree with me are stupid.
  • Sometimes I am wrong and it is good if others express disagreement and explain their position.
  • Most/All people are stupid whether they agree with me or not.

I am curious what others might answer on this poll. I hope you will answer seriously. You can answer anonymously or post a reply if you wish to discuss it or make your view public.

Interesting thread, but too vague. Disagree with me about what? Sure, if people disagree with me on fundamental things I deem obvious I might perceive them as stupid, which doesn’t mean they actually are. Sometimes regarding certain more complex issues I know less about I’d rather people disagree with me and explain their position thoroughly.

But in the end, I am stupid so what do I know

You make a valid point. The poll is a little too vague to gain data for identifying conversational dispositions in a variety of situations.

I also think that probably everyone could reasonably select the third option (“Sometimes those who disagree with me are stupid.”) and the data would be sufficiently vague to reflect the question, unless those answering do not believe in stupidity or intentionally adopt an interpersonal style which gives people the benefit of the doubt, or else are highly sure/proud of themselves.

Also, the fifth option (“Sometimes I am wrong and it is good if others express disagreement and explain their position.”) could overlap the second, third and fourth options, as no indication about a belief in stupidity is made, but I think would reflect the intentionally understanding interpersonal style indicated above.

I also considered adding a “this poll and its author are stupid” or “other” feature, but I figured that no one could ever consider this poll stupid, unless of course they were themselves stupid  .

The ‘sometimes I am wrong’ bit is compatible with most of the other options, so I wanted to pick that one and one other. Picked the other.

No such thing as stupid.

Which fantasy land do you live in?

The results so far are intriguing. I expected that someone might choose the last option (There is no such thing as stupidity) but I didn’t expect it to lead.

“Most/All people are stupid whether they agree with me or not.” also got a vote. :icon-mrgreen: Wasn’t me though.

If people disagree with me when I’m correct, yes, they’re stupid. That’s what stupid means.

If you have in mind matters of faith, opinion and taste, etc., then people who disagree with me simply have different tastes, opinions and faiths - hardly a reason to call them “stupid.”

Something like that, anyway.

IF PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH YOU WHILE LIVING WITH YOU, AND YOU ARE DICTATOR -
THEN THEY ARE STUPID.
IN RESULT IT COST THEIR LIFE.

IF PEOPLE AGREE WITH YOU EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT DICTATOR BUT JUST POOR PATHETIC GUY -
THEN TOO THEY ARE STUPID.
IN RESULT IT COST THEIR STYLE OF LIVING !!

What if they use faith, opinion and taste to escape criticism when you know you’re almost certainly right?

Denial isn’t stupidity. Stupidity is subjective. Denial can be delusional, but even delusional is not stupidity.

Stupidity doesn’t really exist because it’s based on opinion. Majority or not, it doesn’t really matter.

Is IQ also based on opinion and subjective, Artimas? Because that’s the primary measure of intelligence/stupidity.

When you say “me” do you mean “you”?

Stupidity is in the eye of the beholder.

Stupidity is based on the lack of knowing. Ignorance. It isn’t all reasoning and logic.

IQ tests are unreliable to determine intelligence because it isn’t just based on intelligence, it is based on motivation as well. Highly intelligent people can score low on the tests for IQ because they don’t feel the need to do it, there is no real point to it.

What’s intelligence? Academics? Problem solving? Logical/reasonable thinking? Memorizing?

IQ doesn’t measure creativity. There are geniuses who lived by their making music, art, etc. No one is stupid because they know something that you don’t. You know something that they don’t. This doesn’t make them stupid, it makes them different. So that’s what stupidity truly is… if someone is “different” in being or knowing.

Creativity doesn’t fit into IQ, and that’s funny because creativity is probably the single most important aspect to creation. Most of the time geniuses are creators of something great that people adore, need, want, etc. Or the finders of something great through creative mixed logical thinking.

You know anything about Egypt or Atlantis? How about Sumeria? What about the traditions today such as Easter/Christmas, etc. Know where they come from? If not, that means in your own terms. You’re stupid. In my terms, that doesn’t make you stupid. That makes you unknowing but knowing of something I don’t which kind of negates the entire point of being “stupid”.

Ah, so you’re using your own, personally constructed meaning of the word stupid which has nothing to do with how the rest of the world uses it?
Stupidity is usually meant to indicate an inherent (lack of) potential for learning and reasoning. NOT an ignorance about some specific subject.

Motivation is in most cases an irrelevant factor. There is no such thing as a mandatory IQ test that I’m aware of - people choose to take it. If they weren’t motivated, they wouldn’t take it, simple as that.

All of that.

It sort of does measure creativity, or at least can be used to make a reasonable assumption about somebody’s creativity. A person with an IQ of 80 and below is very unlikely to come up with any original ideas or write books etc. In fact, they usually have problems functioning in society and performing any kind of mentally demanding work.

The geniuses you so frequently mention and admire are all people with an IQ above 130. Another coincidence?

The fact that you are so evasive about all this tells us something about you as well.

Actually i was just going off of the synonym which is ignorance. Stupid also says “Lacking common sense” Which wisdom is partially common sense and knowledge. So really it is also ignorance as well due to having to do with knowing or not knowing. Stupidity being the antonym of wisdom.

It doesn’t really measure creativity. It measures logical perhaps reasonable problem solving. Creativity doesn’t require a time limit either. I am sure there are plenty of musicians, artists and inventors who don’t have high IQ’s.

Evasive about what. I am not saying it’s bad to have a high IQ or even test yourself. Even Stephen Hawking said IQ boasting is for losers though.

I am evasive to the idea that some people are stupid. Regardless of what they aren’t good at, they are good at something that you and me aren’t. That’s the positive of diversity and individuality. I have no doubt geniuses have high IQ’ and don’t really care if they did or didn’t honestly.

You can call someone stupid if they don’t know what you do. Then someone can call you stupid if you don’t know what they know… Because you don’t know everything, and they don’t know everything. This doesn’t make you or them stupid, this makes you or them different. How is that missed? It’s pretty simple.
You do archaeology? Make music? Know about ancient civilizations? If not then that makes you stupid?

There are just some terms that we use for each other that aren’t entirely literal. Good, evil and stupidity being a few of those terms.
