I was torn whether to select “yes” or “no”, and I finally decided on “no”. As much as I would love to see Sculpter banned from ILP, if I voted “yes” that would make me no better than him. Banning people because you don’t like them or the things they say is what a person like Sculpter would do. It’s a very lefty thing to do, and if Sculpter is anything, he’s a lefty. Even someone as despicable as Sculpter deserves to have a voice. Isn’t that one of the virtues we hold to? We who are opposed to Sculpter, we who hold right-wing conservative (or classic liberal) values which include the right to free speech and anti-censorship. Don’t we stick by the motto: “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” If anyone stands opposed to Sculpter, do not betray your own values by voting to ban him. The minute we start banning people because we’re offended by the things they say, ILP loses any value it might have. The whole reason I like ILP is because of how tolerant it is to radical and offensive points of view. It creates an atmosphere where one doesn’t feel like they’re walking on egg shells. And also where any views that are too radical or dangerously misguided can receive the scrutiny and criticism they deserve, which is far more effective at neutralizing the damaging effects such views would have if left to their own devices. So I vote no, don’t ban Sculpter. It may be irritatingly annoying to keep him around, but we ought to be the bigger men and women.
So there you go Sculpter, you’re welcome. I look forward to tearing your posts to shreds in every encounter we have here on ILP.
Ecmandu, you are nothing like Biggy. If there were two members of ILP who are candidates for the best examples of polar opposites, it would be you and Biggy. And I would consider neither of you “clowns”. You are schizophrenic. Biggy is… well, I’ve been trying to figure out what Biggy is from day one–he is something but he may be too complicated to figure out. Both of you have “clownish” aspects that one can poke at and make fun of, but overall I think you and Biggy are so much more, enough for “clown” to be such an insufficient label that I wouldn’t use it.
Smears has a motorbike?
Oh, the cognitive dissonance!
So multiple boards banned you for “no valid reason at all”, huh? Each and every one… no valid reason. Did they collude together or was this just amazing coincidence? I’ve never heard a disgruntled forum poster ever assess why they were banned, censored, given warnings, etc. other than that they spoke the truth and others didn’t want to hear it. It’s never that they broke the forum rules, or said something overtly offensive, or were making life difficult for other posters… no, no, no, it’s just the truth… pure objective unbiased truth with no intention whatsoever of being provocative… and forum mods are simply unable to respond objectively, unable to stick to watching for forum rule violations, and are so emotionally outraged (unreasonably so) that they just couldn’t resist banning you.
Let’s make this more believable. What are a few examples of the truths you’ve spoken that got you banned?
Hoping their sites close is definitely giving a damn.
What man that every woman wants and every other man wants to be doesn’t?
Not only that but he has his own collection of political prejudices. Down at the other end of the spectrum. And, I suspect, just like yours, they are rooted deeply in dasein.
I mean, you’re not a fulminating fanatic objectivist are you? An actual Trumpist?!! Only, as I recall, you keep abandoning our exchanges before I can come to a decent conclusion.
How about a new thread? You pick the context.
In fact, if you’re willing, I’m willing to make it all about who can make the bigger fool out of the other.
You know, until phoneutria comes back.
Same here. Your take on that vs. mine.
You know, given a particular set of circumstance.
Come on, I’m sure there are those here who believe that if anyone can put me in my place, it’s you.
I was banned for staying on topic and stating FACTS about how Einstein’s second postulate is bunk. That’s right, for continuously giving reasons why relativity is trash on a science forum. The mods would delete my posts and ban me because they couldn’t stand to hear the truth that I posted. I was banned for stating there is absolute time, and giving reasons WHY.
I was banned from an automotive forum for revealing a liar. They chose to ban me to protect their buddy’s reputation.
Trumped up charges to get rid of the “trouble maker.”
People on the right also want to ban things (e.g. abortion, homosexuality, etc.) And they want to forbid these things on a national level i.e. they want to make sure they don’t happen anywhere in the country. How does an entire country (such as that of United States) compare to a small, barely visible, forum such as this one?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with banning per se (and the growing conviction that there is is a serious problem that must be addressed but not here in this post.) We do it all the time. You do it too. When was the last time you let other people talk to you whenever they want, however they want and as long as they want? Is it fine for me to yell at you while you’re sleeping?
What matters is what you want to ban, to what extent you want to ban it and why you want to ban it. And in the case of Sculptor, the reason I think he should be banned is because he’s disrespectful towards other members. It has absolutely nothing to do with the ideas that he’s espousing and everything to do with how he interacts with other poeple. He’s quite simply someone whose behavior makes it difficult for civilized exchanges to take place. He is defeating the very purpose of philosophy boards.
I can think of people outside of America who want to ban it. But of course, American conservativism isn’t the same as the Eastern European kind.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Matt Walsh was totally up for it considering that he is – if my memory is correct – totally up for banning all kinds of heterosexual relationships that he considers to be deviant. Either way, the point is that the political right is totally up for banning things. Abortion being an example that you’re not denying.
But it is a ban. You are not allowed to kill another human being.
It’s disingenuous to suggest that anyone, outside of nazis and old school communists, which I grant you are not ghosts in Europe, is pursuing any kind of legal persecution of any kind of sexual behavior that doesn’t brake some baseline rules, like age and imposition.
Nazis and old school communists, of course, being the left’s problem.
The Muslims who outlaw sexual behaviors are, too, aligned with the left wing of our cultural sphere wherever a pro and con position exist in that country.
The right wing is aligned with freedom. Some things we find too abhorrent to include, like killing an unborn baby. But the distinction between who seeks to regulate, restrict and ban and who wants the government as far away from decent people as possible is clear.
There is no right wing in Europe. There are only international socialists and national socialists. There are no actual conservatives left. Some Americophiles, like Salvini, but they play a dangerous game always with the national socialists. Which I guess they have to, because like I said, there is no meaningful conservative presence. WW2 pretty much established socialism in Europe. Churchill was the last great conservative. Thatcher already was able to operate only as an Americophile, there was already no indigenous right wing.
Look at who represents the “right” in France. Some crazy woman talking about saving the environment and an international capitalist conspiracy.
It is fine for the government to ban abortion everywhere in the country but it is not fine for an owner of a small, barely visible, forum to temporarily (if not permanently) ban a member that is disrespectful toward other members. The former is love and compassion, the latter is dictatorship and fascism. You want women to go through unwanted pregnancy in order to give birth to a baby that nobody wants and that will most likely suffer in life but you don’t want to temporarily ban a verbally abusive person on a forum that is known to no more than 50 people in the world – all because that’s a horrible, leftist, thing to do.
Science Forum’s like to talk about science. It would be pointless to encourage people who constantly attack people with inherent nonsense.
It would be like a Christian Forum allowing a cult of Devil worshippers to keep trolling their site.
Or allowing a communist to post on a Trump fan site.
What did you expect?
I expected a science website to look at the facts, and not treat their science as a religion. It turns out that science sites are not concerned with the facts, they would rather worship their religion.
I expected intellectual honesty from a science site, and I found a bunch of corrupt douchebags.
What about murdering Scultpor? I am sure he is as disliked in life as he is in this forum, and probably an active nuisance to many. Does that make him an unwanted life that nobody wants? Should the murder ban be lifted?
Banning people has made this website mediocre when it could have been great. They banned a bunch of people to protect the feelings of oversensitive university students with Hitler complexes, so that it all became a simulacrum rather than a conversation.
It’s not because it’s a nasty leftist thing to do, though it clearly is, but because it strongly degrades the quality of the site.
