does anyone know of some good philosophical movies? the only ones i can think of that i’ve seen are dead poet’s society, cast away, and slc punk.
Butterfly Effect
Matrix
The Wall (Pink Floyd movie)
1984
The Name of the Rose
-Imp
Blade Runner
American Beauty
Fight Club
The Usual Suspects
…there’s actually quite a lot of films in which you could find philosophical topics…
(although… friggin’ Castaway??? blech…)
Imp - thank you for citing Name of the Rose, this would not have occurred to me but is an excellent choice.
How the hell is Cast Away a philosophical movie??
I love SLC Punk, a wonderful flick, but if you want to see some stuff that will blow your mind, you need to delve into anime.
Ghost In The Shell and Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence are both groundbreaking anime pictures which have a level of philosophical insights that serve as standard setters. What I mean by that is, you would not have the Matrix unless you first had GITS.
Oh, yeah, how about Donnie Darko?
edward scissor hands
big fish
donnie darko
21 grams
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
house of sand and fog
the far side of the moon
solaris
blue velvet
dead man
magnolia
muholland drive
black and white
garden state
oh and i robot i saw that last night
it talks more about the terms of sanity than anything else
what about memento? i’ve heard it is but i havent seen it
A. Memento is pretty good;
B. If a discussion of sanity is what you’re after, the film version of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is quite good.
I Heart Huckabees
Must see!!!
I’d second that Donnie Darko recommendation, Garden State, and all of Rami’s other input (That’s a great list). I second the Swashbuckler’s suggestion of Memento but would also add Following which is a film by the same fella, but it came first.
Rami – I haven’t seen the House of Sand and Fog but my eyes always seem to drift over it’s title when I’m at the video store. Is this a strong recommendation of yours?
The Green Room, a great film about despair
Mind Walk
Waking Life
My Dinner With Andre. Those last 3 revolve around conversation more than plot
The Last Temptation of Christ
Eraser Head
8 1/2 by Federico Fellini
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie by Luis Bunuel
Throne of Blood, which was Akira Kurosawa’s remaking of Macbeth set in fuedal Japan
M, by Fritz Lang
A Pure Formality
I think all really good films are bound to have some philosophical value, just as any really good novel will.
How about Roshomon by Kurosawa
or The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman?
(…among others by those directors…)
That is, if you don’t mind reading subtitles.
Has anyone seen Mulhulland Drive? I heard it is hard to figure out, but is it a philosophical film?
ok that’s enough…thanks.
it’ll take me a year to get through that list anyway
How dare you say it’s enough without mentioning Spaceballs?
Triumph of the Will
-Imp
Has anyone seen Mulhulland Drive? I heard it is hard to figure out, but is it a philosophical film?
Mulholland Drive was definitely hard to figure out (at least for me), and I had to read some commentaries to really get everything that was going on. I wouldn’t really call it a philosophical movie though, psychological yes, but not philosophical. Its an interesting concept, it screws with your head a bit, but I don’t think it really delves into any sort of world-view… i guess i found it to say more about the way a mind works than the way the world works, so I lumped it in with psych.
How dare you say it’s enough without mentioning Spaceballs?
i’m sorry, i love Spaceballs, and i can quote like the entire thing cause i’ve seen it about 800,000 times, but i have yet to find philosophical meaning in it.
