Philosophy and Women!

Feminism in philosophy? I feel that philosophy is a male dominated subject. There is a huge lack of women philosophers. Some feminists believe that a few women did manage to make a philosophical contribution, but that this contribution has been overlooked because of bias against work by women.

Any insight on this?

Feminism in philosophy? Quite hard to find. Unfortunately in the time that philosophy had it’s golden era’s and ‘advancements,’ women were considered to be below man, since they were mostly illiterate due to the lack of education.

If you want to see how philosophers fought for Women’s Rights, read an excellent book called “The History of Woman,” I don’t have it ATM but I can get more information on the book itself if you want. It has summaries of what and who contributed to the Woman’s Suffrage, and also the texts themselves.

If you are interested in a female philosopher, check out Mary Midgley. She has done some interesting work as far as I have read. She has a book called “Animals and why they Matter” which is pretty good. In it she relates the animals to women and minorities in the world. Good read…

Thank you for those recommendations! I’ll check them out!

“There are few women philosphers because when a woman uses logic its unremarkable, but when a man uses logic it deserves applause.” - Unknown

What about Hipparchia the Cynic?

Butler, de Beauvoir, Cixous, Iriguary, Sontag, Rand, and many others.

I took a feminist philosophy and literature class and it was one of the most challenging and stimulating classes ever.

I would really recommend de Beauvoir’s second sex. she writes with your question in mind.

Another good one is Friedman’s Feminine Mystique.
