In my semi annual cleaning of our Library I came across a book that my grandfather gave me back when I was 15. It hooked my soul into thinking. Its called The Treasury of Philosophy by Dagobert D. Runes, published 1955. It is a collection of works well known and almost unknown. From A to Z he collected the works and words that impact and impacted humanity. 1275 pages of people and their philosophies from across the ages.

Starting with Peter/Pierre Abailard (1079-1142) One of His contributions to humanity was a piece of work “on sin” Any one have this piece it begins with:

" When the scripture says: Go not after your own desires’ (Eccles.xviii,30), and turn from your own will, It instructs us not to fulfill our desires. yet, it does not say that we aare to be wholy without them. it is vicious to give into our desires;but to not have any desires at all is impossible for our weak nature.

Anyone want to discuss A to Z philosophers ??? anyone??? I can’t promise to find links hopefully someone can. I suck at searches. 😆

In my private moments, Abailard is a personal hero of mine. Well, up until the point where he gets castrated.

B is easy, Boethius.

I’ve got a good candidate for C too, but I’ll let the Frenchies have it. Besides, it really ought be a K if we want to be modern about it.

😆 jump straight to the rest of them with out discussing the first? His thoughts on the weakness of man and sins really whomped the church. He redefined sin and man. tis worthy of a couple of paragraphs, No?

And what of other A’s ;Judah Abravanel? His works on knowledge were pretty insightful for the early 1500s. There would be some that would say Adler needs mentioning along with Magnus Albertus, Alghazzi? And I would like to not forget the work of Anaxagoras (500- 428BC) Are you familiar with any works of these men? If not, at least pick up Anaxagorus and Alghazzi.

D for Democritus and E for Epicurus, who said that what is moral is so because it results in pleasure and what is immoral is so because it results in pain. Moderate hedonism, I like it a lot.

but it is more vicious to desire to do that which is prescribed by the saintly under the guise of willing eternal paradise…

He gave the intent the sin not the action. This broke with common religious idea. It was the action that was the sin. The intent, is the weakness and thus it is the sin. Man cannot live without sin because man is weak with desires/intent.
So can any God having made us in such a way ecpect us to be more?

F for Foucault.

Bald, gay, a bit nuts, French, but despite these considerable disadvantages he’s a beast of a philosopher.

Hey Krossie , How are you?

If anything it will cause some to leave. Net, computers etc. are luxuries. Folks are cutting back on luxuries. College kids are going to have a tough time financially with neccessities as it is.

Derrida had his profound moments, Most of us do, so I am not sure that is a qualifier 😆

Is there a block party here and you all forgot to tell me? I resent not being given the same drink or drugs you all are on… 😆

Wait I get it! I am not the only one here with Dyslexia! You all are skipping around because of that right???

How about we discuss what or how each impacted us, why and what works?

Since A seems to have gotten off to a ummmm, giddy start, B?
Boethius was brought up as was Badiou, for those that delight in Anarchy I put forth Bakunin, for me I rather am appealed by Henri Bergson. He wrote with the common person in mind simple and understandable. Even his most complex could be understood by the general public. His comparisions on human and animal conciousness pushed me to read more of his works even though I had disagreement with his thoughts and as a teenager that one work brought me to study life more closely.

Krossie, if you work too hard just remember to play too hard the next time you get the chance,It should even out ,right? 😆

Guess I missed “A”. Can I go with Buddha for “B”? Is that cheating? Seems to have the widest effect on thinking - if we’re talking impact on humanity. In this country alone, there are more Buddhist poseurs than ther are Nietzschoids.

(Aquinas gets my “A” vote - disturbing trend so far).

Well Bentham was just a sorta ruse to smoke you ou and into a passionate defence of Derrida - actually while you’re there what is that article called - Plato’s Pharmacy or something I rember reading and thinkin maybe he’s not quite the eejit I thought he was!

Buddhists seek to avoide suffering

- Whats nietzsche’s line?

I remember in atutorial we were thinking of forming a Nietzsche practical work shop

1. Y hits X

What should X do?

In rank order we get!

A. X says “Gadflys stings bother me little”

B. X “I forget what just happened!”

C. X punches back immediately

D. Worst option X stews in resentiment and plots revenge…
