Pirates of the caribbean: dead man chest

It has been over 85 here for over
a week and the wife and I were desperately
trying to find a place to cool off. Movie theatre
time. Went to see Pirates of the caribbean: dead mans chest.

I kinda like the first one because it didn’t really take itself too
seriously, It had fun with itself. The second one keep going,
and going and going for no real apparent reason. Only
depp seemed to understand they were in a light weight froth
film. The creatures, many, many creatures, almost to many
to keep track of, were ok, but like everything else in this
film, they tried too hard. Not much in the way of comedy and
the action seemed contrived and there to be gawked at.
Keira Knightly has gone from plucky, to being downplayed,
sullen, serious. Orlando bloom still can’t act and is really
given nothing that stretches him. I would give this film a C
for nothing else then they tried hard. they at least tried to
create a film worth seeing. Johnny Depp is the sole reason
to see this film and he does a great job at it. If you dislike
his first performance, your sure to hate this one.

See on the otherhand, I greatly enjoyed Pirates 2. I do not think it was as good as the first, but it was still a vastly entertaining movie.

Orlando Bloom will probably not learn to act in my lifetime. He may greatly improve, but I do not see acting greatness in his future. He is a decent action star however as he can fight well.

Johnny Depp continues to impress with Capt. Jack Sparrow. He maintains everything we loved him for in the first movie, plus shows all the deception that he has used to keep him alive for this time. They exposed an obvious relationship with the swamp witch, but did not reveal too much. This is still a middle movie, you want to leave some leftovers for number 3.

Norrington was greatly enjoyable for his short run, for being the snipey bastard we knew from the first movie. Ambitious, self-centered, actually quite a good character.

Keira Knightley is still hot. And that’s her real draw here. She is better at acting than Bloom, but still not on par with other cast members. Her downplayed role was good, but developed enough with her willingness to travel to the “dark side” as well. Her character is forming up well.

We lacked the same strong villain that Geoffrey Rush provided, but Davy Jones was still a good bad guy. Complex, driven, and determined. The CG was very good except for a couple minor bits. And the crew was remarkable with their makeup and costuming.

The waterwheel scene is one of the best choreographed fights for some time. Although the sword fighting itself was not phenomenal, the interaction during it was fantastic. The side fight with Keira, two pirates and the crew was also very good.

Overall, it suffered from a bit of middle movie, but still kept me watching intently for the entire duration. Can’t wait for Chow Yun Fat in Pirates 3.

Dead Man’s Chest was fantastic, in my opinion. Never a dull moment, well paced and very much a serial adventure. For the kids and teens out there the Pirates franchise has become like the new Indiana Jones. The movie even came complete with a cliffhanger ending and the promise of more to come. Personally I’m glad to see the characters back, particularily Captain Jack, and I am all itchy for the next movie to come out.

Pirates 2 has been one of my favorite movies this year, up there with Brick.

Manifested, what do you think of Elizabeth Swann’s struggle? What do yo think is going on there? Was she faking it all the way or is there some genuine interest? Suppose that Swann pulls the switch, how do you think the writers will try to work it so that Turner isn’t left in the lurch?

I think Dead Man’s Chest was far superior to the first film… and I am just as itchy to go see the next one. Honestly, I didn’t expect the movie to be that good and I would suggest that it is my favorite film of the year, so far.

If you think 85 is hot then try 107 in Renaissance garb. That is of course if you’re speaking Farenheit, if you’re thinking Celcius then, well, you’d be dead or something.

Anyway, Thirst, while I think that the double crossing and motivation clashes are a big part of the Pirates appeal I don’t know if Elizabeth is just going along or not. I think she knows that while Jack Sparrow is a carreer criminal he’s never really done anything to wrong her or Will ever, other than that short stint on the escape raft. In fact, thinking about it, he’s seems to be the character who simply wants his freedom, wants his boat, and that’s about it. He’s also the character who gets double crossed all the time and hasn’t really betrayed anyone’s trust. I think there may be some back and forth, but when the end comes Elizabeth will be on the hero’s side.

K: this is the bay area. We get the natural air conditioner of
the fog coming in cooling us off. In fact from San Francisco to
maybe atherton (about 8 miles south of us) people really don’t even
have air conditioners. We don’t need it. We rarely get hot weather.
So 11 days of 85+ most days is hot."

K: double crosses and characters motivation is a lot of hard work for
a summer movie. I like my summer movies, all action and no thinking.

Pirates, while being a step above some action fair in the complexity compartment is hardly a complicated movie. Plus characters in movies have to have motivation, otherwise nothing would move.

i loved the first one and the second one was almost exactly more of the same which i still enjoy. unlike most of the critics if i like something i dont hate it and give it bad feedback the second time around when its delivered the exact same way. i would enjoy these movies for a long time if they continued to make them. in a way however i could see myself getting bored of the stories to some extent the same way im bored of other fantasy stories… but for gods sake its the second movie. people are already turning to other things?

I don’t know about that. Jack is very self-serving. He has had bouts of honor in the first two, but for the most part acts for his own interests. He certainly has a pirates’ honor. He consistently lies, cheats, and deceives to get what he wants. But, can he leave someone to die in his place? It doesn’t appear so. But he certainly has betrayed trust many times.

Elizabeth seems to have conflict, but simple ones. She loves Will, and I think will end up with him. However, she is very intrigued by the danger of it all. Being a very secure person for most of her life, I think she relishes the danger presented in her current activities. I think all 3 of them (Will, Liz and Jack) will end up all on the same crew as sort of co-captains. The movies are quite good but you can’t have too much complexity or you lose the younger audience. And although the action will most likely captivate them, you don’t want to lose anybody if you can help it.

Overall, I do believe that parts of 2 were better than 1. But I think that 1 was more compelling through its entire run than 2. Parts of 2 were good but didn’t serve the overall story as well. 1 felt like one contiguous movie, whereas 2 felt almost episodic. I could imagine watching 2 as weekly installments rather than one full length movie.

I personally think that the writers will pussy out… they will make it so that she wasn’t attracted to Jack Sparrow but the lifestyle. Thus, Will Turner will become a pirate and this is how she can be with him and have her desire for adventure satisfied. I hope I am wrong… A Swann is a better fit with a Sparrow than with whatever a “turner” actually is. Besides, Will seems to desire a life as a normal guy and not as a pirate. Will the father connection convert him over to the Pirate life? This is a Disney movie… you can’t have a nice guy like Will Turner being hurt, can you?
