Point A to point B and... Got Wool?

Given rising fuel costs, transportation costs have to rise as well. How has this affected your moving around? We still have to get to and from work, buy beans and toilet paper, so what are you doing differently? Anything?

For those of us living in temperate climates requiring energy to heat our houses in the winter, whacha gonna do?

Honestly, not much except for complain alot. But I can see how driving 40 miles to my school and back in a '95 cadillac that gets 15 miles to the gallon come this fall will be a problem, which is why I took all my classes 2 days a week.

We’re switching from fuel oil to natural gas this summer, as far as heating goes. It’s cleaner - producing water vapor as waste as far as I know, and cheaper, which to be frank, is the main reason we’re changing the system.

We don’t heat much really, it’s fairly warm here, even in winter, but for the kids we’d tough it out with a few extra jumpers.

Petrol prices are killing me though, I do about 70 km a day. Not much, but still too much. I dread to think what will happen when India and China go wholesale mobile.

Behold the new face of pollution. All in the name of personal freedom of course, because everyone has the right to really fuck up the atmosphere.

That looks like a mutated VW

We will begin buying bulk items more splitting the costs with neighbors. Gas prices? That is not a real problem yet, we live 10 minutes away from work and we generally keep a gas can full of gas anyway for my mowers, that gives us an extra day or two in a pinch. My hearse will be getting a new engine one that burns alternative fuels within the next year or two. As will our other main vehicles. Right now we have a pretty efficient minivan and we get paid well enough so we won’t be hurting too bad come winter. We can still afford the higher costs, once we start getting more bulk items. We normally spend 130 per month. Winter comes around it jumps up to about 270 in electricity. I imagine we will be seeing 350 this winter at least, we are planning for 400 this year. It won’t break us, hurt like hell sure. But, it just takes some planning and fortitude. I may even have to cut back on my vices :frowning:

London, and Islington (the borough I live in) is already expensive - I’m just gonna focus on keeping all my bills to a minimum, and yes, a few extra layers in Winter will ensure having to spend less on heating…

My travelling is highly moderated to a “need to” basis.

As far as heating bills … I’m going to start burning fat people. It serves a dual purpose; I get good heat, and am less likely to have starvation as an issue, at least locally, unless the trend kicks in …

Why is it France can achieve 74% of it’s localised energy from nuclear plants and all I hear in the U.S. is “ethanol” and “biomass” bullshit that would only create more problems than either of them could solve …

Oh, wait, CAS. Answered my own question.

 I don’t think my neighbors would trust me with a nuke powered hearse.

Not a lot really…

As it stands it is still cheaper and quicker for me to drive the 20 odd miles to work than it is to get 2 trains.

As for heating, well prices are going up 40% this month or next (I work for Scottish Gas, I know!) but we generally don’t have the heating on much. The wee man will be older so will cope better, and the flat is double glazed and keeps heat in really well, so we’ll probably just turn the thermostat down to save on the cost.
