OK I’m not precisely sure what the point I’m trying to make here is though maybe it’ll sharpen in discussion.
There was an actual historical person called Michael Jackson who was a child star – made some funky disco hits and sold a lot of albums and died fairly recently.
Then sometime around the mid 90s a myth congealed around this actual person.
A level of fame and celebrity so vast, so far to the extreme edge of the curve, so completely integral to Western pop culture that the actual person, the actual factual status of the individual called Michael Jackson seems to have become simply a container for every doubt and insecurity society had about itself.
Is there a level of fame (Elvis springs to mind) where fact and myth some how merge or where it is no longer possible to be sure of any fact.
Almost as if, in late capitalism, vast amounts of fame, money and power can form a sort of huge field which can actually distort our epistemological knowledge – so that one can no longer be sure of the actual biographical facts about a person.
(This even had a material manifestation in the actual internet slow down after his death)
What, any more is known or knowable on a certain basis about Michael Jackson – or will we for ever be in never neverland?
Was he
White or black?
Gay or Straight?
Paedophile or confused, permanent child?
Father or sperm donor?
(In an almost Godlike move) where is be buried?
Could he rise again (Zombie thriller video)
Is there any thing that one wouldn’t believe of Michael Jackson?
Has he moved from the status of person (chunky young disco dancer) to some nebulous, mythological all-encompassing signifier – so that the actual factual person has entirely disappeared and had done even before his death…
It must be made clear that I personally neither use nor endorse the MJ brand
(tho’ the early records were kinda catchy)
I don’t think it’ll take the exact same form as Elvis worship but I think it’ll be just as much the social phenomenon as if not more so!
Sure there were already hundreds/thousands of jacko impersonators at all the memorial yokes waving their spandex gloves about…
