Only protest music I recall was from the Perfect Circle band… I don’t look to teenagers to explain politics to me, if it was up to me, nobody under 30 would be allowed to vote. Lots of angry bands of teenagers destroying their brain cells with drugs and alcohol on subjects they really don’t know much about both intellectually and experientially. I’ve known guys in college who know every anarchist who ever wrote, hitting up every protest… yet never held a job themselves… never did squat, yet they insisted they knew better. I can’t find them now, even when I know their real name, just fell off the net… life caught up.
I’m on the one hand very freedom of speech oriented, but at the other end, look down with disgust that treat universities like they ate the Temple of Artemis, where any idiot student can flee into a university after committing a crime getting off scot free, as if students are somehow smarter than everyone else, the arbiters of change.
They certainly are arbiters… but usually not of positive change. Its stupid, hormone driven, usually what their teachers or peers hashed out, poorly reflective of the needs of the larger society. I regret riot gas and tasers aren’t used on them more, one of my happiest memories is when at UC Davis the idiot protesters we’re knelling in a line demanding to be maced on camera, and the security guard shrugged his shoulders and obliged.
That was fucking awesome. They got their quantum of protest, and also a service of justice all in one. I advertised on the net right after my willingness to be filmed macing guys contractually (have to sign a non-liability) with pictures taken so they can show all their friends how liberal they are, and I could make some money. Win-win.
A true American Hero. They protest because it is a way of life, because mommie and daddie did so. That kills all legitimacy in their speech, distracting people from real issues, real problems, real protesters elsewhere no suffering from Upper-Middle Class Syndrome. He is evidence of a just society is still possible. He is music to my ears. Love that guy.
