He probably is kept out of dangers way completely, and sits around in his uniform with his gun for the photo shoots.
The whole things was a completely publicity stunt, to make it seem like this royal pampered fool was actually contributing something to society.
The idea that he would be anywhere near a ‘hot’ zone is ridiculous.

Cut him slack? Why? He’s more than a bit of a jackass. Parading around in a Nazi uniform trying to be cool and then going to “war” and sitting in a safe bunker the entire time. This guy is a joke.
We all do stupid/ignorant things, but he also does humanitarian things that we don’t do… just a thought!
I’m fairly sure if most people were in the spotlight as he is, they would not be so stupid as to wear a Nazi costume.
As for his humanitarian deeds, do I have the money to do what he does? No. Do I have the time? No.
I try to buy American made clothing and products when possible. I lend a helping hand to friends as needed. I’ve made donations to charities acceptable to my income. His humanitarian deeds are no greater than mine. He simply has more money and publicity. Besides, I highly doubt he wakes up hung over thinking “I should really give to someone.” I’d bet considerable money it’s a PR guy telling him who and what to give to.
I have no problem with him enlisting in the army, but let him do it of his own back, not let granny ensure he gets special privileges. My one sole problem with the royals, is that they get everything on a silver plate, but then moan they cannot lead a normal life. You want a normal life, then give back the millions that this country pay to keep you in your robes and palaces each year. Whilst Harry is ‘HRH’, he cannot live a normal live, and sadly for him, that includes being a soldier. Britain’s love affair (or should that be En-gur-land’s?) with the royals has gone on too long.
Just voicing my opinion on the matter, but I do agree on the subject of having to support them with our hard-earned cash: many other European countries have stopped this practice, and the UK should follow suit.
