Publishing books?

How difficult is the process of publishing a novel? I’m clueless here…is there anyone here who’s been published, or trying to publish? I think the creative writing process sounds like fun…but should I expect to get by the publishers?

Two books come to mind that explain the process in some pretty acute (and candid) detail. The first is Robert Persig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence (Perennial Classics edition), and the other is A Heartbreaking Mind of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. In Persig’s case, the material is included in the appendix. In Eggers’ book, his introduction is extraordinarily unique and lengthy, and it includes many specifics (even down to dollars and cents) on the publication process.

Otherwise, I’m sure there’s books (not to mention websites) that focus on this subject and can tell you much of what you need to know.

Oh so if you write a novel and then save it to your hard drive, publishers won’t automatically call you on the phone to give you money?

Dammit. .

Thanks Daybreak, I’ll check it out.
