Question About Editing Posts

Is there some sort of deadline on editing a post? There seems to be something I posted which I cannot edit, delete or do anything with really. What gives? I’m talking about “New Realization” I posted in Arts, Music and Entertainment. Like a week after I posted it I noticed you could display the youtube video within the post itself and attempted to fix this. Wouldn’t let me edit though.

48 hours.

That’s fuckin stupid, oh well whatever, thanks for letting me know.

i don’t think it’s stupid, i kinda think it’s silly that they give you so long to do it. should be max 24 hours imo, 6 might even be better. otherwise beezies will go back to their old debates that they lost and try to change history, make the other person look stupid, ruin the context of the original conversation etc. limiting the availability to edit it preserves context and history.

Yeah but if people would just stop being twats then we wouldn’t have to worry about it. I don’t think there are any such restrictions on ILO and I never see it abused. Perhaps there should only be an allowance of adding, or slightly changing, if that were at all possible. Somehow prevent someone from TOTALLY changing it but still allow you to fix spelling errors, etc.

I embedded the video for you, Kebop. By the way, I believe the Realunoriginal has deleted many posts on ILO. I could be wrong about that.

Well I would hope he would at least try to clean up the mess he leaves.

Thanks.

Any time. Just ask.

This is a great idea. Anyone know if something like this can be implemented?

Very true. It’s always a question of whether we legislate to the lowest common denominator or not (which often means less legislation – a good thing).

It’s risk management. I have, over the last couple of days, had to delete more than a few (old) threads because the OP was entirely deleted by the original poster. I know of no way to limit editing except with a time limit.

You should talk too Monooq, he started a whole thread about it. It’s on his current signiture as well, this is it "Within 48 hours, you can kiss whatever you write on ILP goodbye–ILP owns it.

Though personally I think it’s good that theres a deadline.

FYI, I have found more deleted OP’s each time I look. Probably have found thirty or so over that last several days. Sometimes, the original poster has deleted not only the OP but subsequent posts. It’s a pain in the balls.

I think the easiest (for admin and moderators) way to deal with the problem of deleted OP/posts would be placing a detection system for abusive editing and resurrection system for the deleted posts.

Technically, it’s easy to modify phpBB a bit to detect the extent of edition, and temporary removing the editing right for someone who did excessive editing and notifying mods (for resurrection of deleted posts, that can be done with one click of a button, and other measures).
With this type of system, we don’t have to limit editing to 48 hours.
It takes a bit of time to write the code and test it, debug it. Once it’s done, it can save lots of time.

But it’s up to Carleas to decide and also it depends on his time (although I can provide necessary code and other technical support).

Well would you look at that? Someone comes to the fore with technical savvy and an idea that just may work.

Hahah so can you code it to detect bullshit?

I think another positive idea would be to simply make a RULE that: “one will not abuse the editing system, in a manner that works to their argumentative advantage, or seeks to destroy the preservation of thought on this forum.” If all other rules are followed then no person should have to be embarrassed or feel the need to intellectually compete and simply work towards a greater understanding within the forum as a whole. If some choose not to follow the rules, then document this in the Hall of Shame to the best of your ability if you deem it necessary.

That might be asking a bit too much though don’t ya think? I just love the concept of unspoken rules or rather just rules which cannot be enforced and we go on trust alone. These are the best types, the most necessary types of laws. To me it seems that if there should be anywhere where these types of rules are followed, it would be a forum such as this one.

Oh well, I tried at least.

You mean like this one?

That’s been a rule since Mar 22, 2004 11:01 pm.

I’m sorry, you are correct I didn’t look that shit up at all. Anyway… there’s a rule but I’m saying, remove the restriction, keep the rule.

texting “duhskis jk bt serusly”

We did. It sucked. We changed. This is that change. We like it.

Why thank you sir. This is good news.
