Reiner, 58, director (A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me) and actor (best known as the husband of Gloria Bunker Stivic on the groundbreaking TV sitcom All in the Family )has been accused of defrauding the state of California to the tune of $23 million dollars.

$23 000 000 is what Reiner spent in state funds on commercials that promoted the benefits of nurseries …this “just happened” to coincide with a campaign he was heading to promote Prop 82 a bill that would raise taxes in order to pay for nurseries for 4 year olds. Hmmm…sounds like a noble cause, but using money earmarked in part to help fund daycare for working Mothers seems slightly unethical.

Now, I’ve never had to deal with such large sums of money in my life, but wouldn’t 23 million pay for a lot of quality daycare?

Reiner is good at acting and directing…a veteran of one of the original 70’s Show (s)…you know, the kind that satirized a more authentic version of society through portrayals of realistic fake people rather than contrived “real” people? Now we have “reality celebrities” starving in remote places, forced into bad roommate scenarios, etc.,etc…to keep us entertained. How we have advanced as a society… :unamused:

Quit electing Hollywood…they make the Sicilian Mob look virtuous and trustworthy by comparison. Backstabbing, publicity-seeking, agenda-pushing, vainglorious creatures…(except maybe Jodie Foster, Dustin Hoffman,Robert Redford, etc…) should not be given control of tax dollars. Most people in the entertainment industry are idiots who regurgitate whatever they saw on Oprah that day as their understanding of the world and base their ethical principles on shaky understandings of obscure religions and/or whatever their publicist told them to say. They are disgustingly overpaid as well.

Hmm…maybe they fit right in with government after all.

They both suck…how can we free society from the grip of both?

Suggestions welcome.

I live in California and I haven’t heard a word of this.
If you could be so kind as to offer up some link or
something to show us this is true, I would appreciate it.

Do you get the LA Times? They’ve been following this story for a few days.

Here’s some links to other articles:

After going over the links, most of them were
the exact same story, the la times story was
really strange. It was more about the validity of
preschools programs then it was about reiner’s
alleged involvement in some project. I saw nothing
but conjecture about the project. Not a single bit
of proof that any money was wasted, in any way, shape,
or form. It is simply a witch hunt without any proof.
Now an audit will be held and after that, if it shows
some problems, then great. Hold him to the fire.
but until then, hold your judgement.

No offense, but I don’t think you understand the issue. If there is anything specific that you would like to address, fine. If not, please go away (again, not to be cruel…you do seem like a very nice person in general)

Thanks,

Shy

What a Meathead! :stuck_out_tongue:
Sorry, somebody had to say it, and Carroll O"Connor is dead. Besides, I really can’t help myself with pop culture references

Seriously, maybe we could bring back Joe McCarthy and he could start the whole HUAC thing, do a Hollywood witch hunt, find commies or Al-Qaeda sympathizers or whatever and take down one of the beast with the other.
What, McCarthy’s dead! #-o
:-k Is Bill O’Reilly busy?!
Or…
We could elect Oprah president, if she would be willing to take the loss of status. Then we would have only one enemy to fight, instead of fighting on two fronts. But what if she made her book club mandatory? I don’t think could handle that.
Okay, I need to think this through. I’ll get back to you on this.

Well put, Quiz!

K: I understand the issue quite nicely, thanks for asking.
However the point still stands, there is no proof and an
audit is coming up. I think we should hold our comments
until after the official state of California audit of the entire matter.
If he is found to have misused the money, hay, at that point, I have
no problem throwing him to the wolves or publicly beat him or
whipping him with wet noodles, its all good for abuse
of the public trust.

Hi Shy,

You’re in the entertainment business, so how do I sort out your agenda (personal) and your agenda (business)? While Reiner does seem a bit over the top, I’m not sure that his behavior (good or bad) speaks for all in the entertainment industry. You’ve tossed a rather wide net, are you sure of your conclusions? Not being in the business, I really have no way of knowing, but I have listened to some fairly thoughtful positions on various subjects by some of the hollywood people. Of course, I wouldn’t know anything about their hidden agendas, but some of them seemed reasonably intelligent, and appeared to have well thought out ideas, even though I disagreed with some of them.

It’s very competitive, there is a lot of money involved, and it is as fake as it can be. Some are more than reasonably intelligent and ethical, many are not.
