repression & control

ok any ideas or sites on how repression & control adds to our understanding of what it is to be human?

& examples shown in films or books would be great!

I guess George Orwell’s 1984 or Animal Farm would be one of the examples.

1984 is a great example.

I think Freud (Civilization and its Discontents) can give you some ideas about repression clinically and the neurotic responses to control.

Nietzsche is always a good response to the yoke of Western Morality.

Hobbes is the classic control guy. He justified extreme amounts of control by a ruler on the populace.

Marcuse calls for more eros in our life. Eros and Civilization is a great book too.

I think you should definitely examine some feminist writers, specifically ones that call attention to the repression of women. Here is a book that looks relevant but I haven’t read it yet uno.edu/~asoble/pages/YALE.HTM

I’m a huge fan of the Beat writers. They could be considered a response to 50s conformist attitudes.

The Stranger by Camus might have some good metaphors. Particularly machinery in the second half.

Zorba the Greek is good to contrast the vastly different humanity of Zorba, who disregards social norms.

The Awakening by Kate Chopin could give insight to 19th century feminine experience. The controls of the family, the repression that leads to female alienation from their own sexuality, etc.

I’ll try to think of more.

wow thanku very much!!!
