Revenge----

Does getting revenge on someone really teach them a lesson or does it provoke them to do something worse? Is revenge cyclical or can it stop behavior?
The reason I ask is because I would like to gain some revenge on a person I work with, I would LOVE to get this person fired… Is that a bad thing? :imp:
I have tried to get a long with this person, and I have told this person to settle down when around me. Do I really have to keep putting up with this person’s attitude after I have tried to be friendly with them?

I always say that you have to watch the “buildup” of self-generated negativity. That can one day lead you to hate yourself. However, if the punishment of the crime really is in line with the offense you might end up feeling ok. It’s a gamble.

“351” : Does getting revenge on someone really teach them a lesson or does it provoke them to do something worse?

It depends on whether or not they have knowledge that you were the cause of their peril. Vengence is a dish best served cold…cold enough that it can’t be traced back to you. It won’t make you “feel” any better in the long term, if one of the goals in your life is contentment.

Is revenge cyclical or can it stop behavior?

Again, it depends on whether the one on the receiving end of the revenge knows that their misfortune is due to retribution.

Well, getting a person fired for pissing you off is a little extreme. Why not try physical and psychological intimidation first? The techniques are surprisingly easy to master.

 Good Luck

I guess it does sound pretty extreme to get someone fired for pissing me off. I guess I should have briefly explained what this person did.
This person basically said they don’t like me because I am white, and then said I was like an animal. Now none of these comments actually hurt my feelings but they did piss me off, especially since pretty much everyone else at work has told this person to just settle down, but this person just does not listen and gives the same fony (?) apology everytime a manager talks to her. To me, comments concerning race should be proceded by stern action and are unacceptable.

As far as whether or not this person would learn from this, I doubt it. I would say he is very ignorant in nature and would end up hating different races even more.

Sorry, Double post

351,

Just for clarification, is this person male or female?

No wonder I’m so confused, in the Philosophy Section we have a peronal issue entitled “Revenge” and in the Rant Section we have a topic entitled “Meaningless and Nothingness…” :astonished:

Lol, sort it out Imp.

Revenge as an affirmation of the will to power is fine. Revenge as the petty act of the weak-willed who cannot think of a better way to subvert and transform is a bit sad.

i think revenge subjectively seems like a perfectly fitting balance being symmetrical and complementary but it’s ignoring the subjectivity of mindsets from which silghts originate or perhaps the asymmetry between get hurt/anger response and a hurt/get surprised response. what i really feel is that even if against the odds revenge teaches someone to behave differently they won’t really be enlightened, they’ll be conditioned. the odds of a revenge response being the perfect/appropriate complement to someone’s attack are the odds of a laserbeam from the moon hitting your eye or two splashes hitting eachother cancelling out to nothing. and in that case the instigator would have to have desired revenge and gotten it in exactly the right form and even then the circle is no higher than choosing to remind yourself of something you already knew the hard way by pretending to ignore it. speaking of circles, the idea of retribution is to speed up karma faster than it would happen but the ‘problem is’ re true karma, the cosmos works in mysterious ways.

351, if you were part of any religion, which I assume you’re not, I’d have to call you a dummie.

If you do have some tattered religious beliefs, and the half-wits grasp of right-and-wrong, however, you’ll see that taking any action against this person that you want revenge against is definetly, withuot a doubt BAD, morally. If your looking at moral stance <"…Is that a bad thing? "> then the best thing to do, in fact, is to continue putting up with this person and even try to befriend him, because he is a test, according to whatever religious beliefs you have.

Ignoring the religious beliefs, though, I’d suggest beating the shit out of the guy, for personal gratification, or to teach him a lesson.
