Riddles

LOL, why because all we need is ten players?

You are in a forest, all of a sudden you hear a voice, very faint but clear, you cannot distinguish the sex, but the voice asks a question…HOW MANY FINGERS ON MY HAND?..you look around but the voice sounded like it echoed from all directions.

What is the logically best way to answer the voices question?

“ummm. i don’t know?”

You have to deal with the information you are given. Imagine yourself actually in a forest hearing a voice. Since you don’t know who the voice is, can you know if the voice knows you? No. Since the question is formed in english and refers to the numbers of fingers on his/her hand, you are forced to assume they have a hand, if they have a hand, the question would not be posed if there was no way for you to logically answer, so many are led to assume the answer is 5. Which isn’t far from correct. The best answer should be “as many as there are on mine” since the voice doesn’t have to know how many fingers you have on your hand and it leaves them more confused then yourself. Some people are born with six fingers, some four, but generally we have five. The latter answer “as many as there are on mine” is therefore more fitting than “five” because it doesn’t bind you to any real answer. Should the voice come out and it be a person who has six fingers on their hand, you can just say that logically you could not have answered any other way.

What’s your take?

There are only two answers. One or More, or any number Greater than or equal to Zero.

A cowboy goes on a 3 day horesback ride. He leaves on Tuesday and returns home on Tuesday. How is this possiblbe?

A cowboy goes on a 3 day horesback ride. He leaves on Tuesday and returns home on Tuesday. How is this possiblbe?

Well the cowboy was probably at a ranch for the week. But all the time agglomerated together of him doing nothing but horseback riding added up to 3 days. So he left on Tuesday, came back on Tuesday, and inbetween those days, the horse back ridin he did adds up to 72 hours.

That’s my take.

A riddle…

There is a thing that nothing is, and yet it has a name
'Tis sometimes tall and sometimes short,
Joins our laugh, joins our sport,
And plays at every game.

What is it?

a shadow.

A terrible wonderful riddle: :evilfun:

A word there is of plural number.
Foe to ease and tranquil slumber.
Any other word you take,
And add an “s” will plural make.
But if you add an “s” to this,
So strange the metamorphosis:
Plural is now plural no more,
And sweet what bitter was before.

I give up, man…
What is it?

‘Cares’

The word ‘cares’ is plural, and cares or worries are a ‘foe’ to tranquil sleep. If you add an ‘s’ to the end the word becomes ‘caress’, which means to lovingly touch, and is not plural. If ‘cares’ are considered bad or bitter, then to caress would be just the opposite, good or ‘sweet’.

that’s a good riddle, did you write it?

The cowboy goes on a 3 day horseback ride on Tuesday and comes back on Friday (after the three days) and then goes on a 4 day trip on that day, returning home on Tuesday. Thus he left on Tuesday and returned on Tuesday… right?
(shrug)

Here’s a riddle from one of my most favorite games, which I will reveal after someone solves this.

The person who made it, didn’t want it.
The person who bought it, never used it.
The person who used it, never saw it.
What is it?

Ok I won’t take credit for figuring this out but a math teacher in 6th grade showed me a rule for solving all magic boxes no matter how big they are. There’s no limit as long as it’s a square. For instance a nine square box would look like this:
8 1 6
3 5 7
4 9 2

The rule is called the northeast rule. The number one always goes in the center top box(I forget the rule for when there is an even number of rows sorry) then the highest number always goes on the bottom center. The middle number or if there is two middle numbers the higher one( ie. 5 instead 4) goes in the center box. Here are the steps.

  1. Mover North East putting the next number in order(1 then 2 then 3 etc.)
in the block north east of the last block.

  2. You will eventually (actually the first time) go off the square where your not on a block. When this happens there is either a row or column next to where you would be if there was space. Go all the way across to the end of it and put your number there. Continue going NE.

  3. If there is a number in the way or you go off a corner ( ie above: 6 to 7)
then you go one space south. Keep going NE.

This will work for any square with an odd # of blocks. Try it.

in response to roy,

Magius, did you play “Betryal at Krondor”? Because that is the right answer.

That question was also asked in Baldur’s Gate II, i think it’s quite a common riddle.

Actually, I heard the riddle in school a long time ago. I kept rehearing it, and even articulating it myself, so it has stuck. But I have actually never played Betrayal of Kondor, nor Baldurs Gate II.
