Rollercoaster Accidents

I’ve been a fan of coasters since I was a child and at one point started reading extensively about rollercoaster accidents online because I was never fearful as I rider, but the possibly of injury and death had begun to intrigue me. I don’t know if there are any others out there who love these rides and contemplate the dangers. Here are just two links of many. A good Google search can yield many more and some quite exploitative ones at that. If you’re interested:

Makes you think, man creating a dangerous and entertaining thrill ride…

speaking of roller coaster accidents…

“Funland At The Beach”

Sunny Sunday at the amusement park
See the fat kids spill their pop
Oh babe-lots of flags and balloons
But someone sabotaged the rollercoaster last night

Ran a turn and then it smashed right down
Thru the crowded haunted house below
Oh No
Human hamburger No

And it’s Crushed little Kids
Crushed little Kids
Crushed little Kids
Adorn the boardwalk

See the tourists drop their jaws and cones
See the owners smell a big lawsuit
Oh Police! (call your lawyer first)
Make the witnesses go home
And they’ll turn on the TV

And see the crushed little kids
Adorn the boardwalk - J. Biafra (Dead Kennedys) 1981

Wonderful Imp… ok perhaps it is a little sick that I sit around looking at these sites. Ok, whats the deal with people standing up during the ride- this is not only stupid but I’m sure it’s not easy to do:

“Sunday, May 26, 1985 - In an accident at Astroland Amusement Park at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, a 29-year-old man was killed while riding the Cyclone roller coaster. He stood up and struck his head on a crossbeam.”

“On June 30, 1995, a fourteen-year-old girl died after sustaining a massive head injury from a 25-foot fall from the “Timberwolf” roller coaster. She was reported to have been standing or kneeling at the time of the accident.”

“HW death due to “rider misbehaviour”

The investigation into the death of 32 year-old Tamar Fellner on the Raven roller coaster at Holiday World has determined that it was almost certainly caused by the woman herself.

The ride inspectors report states that both restraints - the lap bar and seatbelt - were working correctly, and that if Fellner had been properly seated at least one would have prevented her falling 80 feet to her death from the rear seat of the train.

Several witnesses at differing locations observed Fellner practically standing up every time the train descended a drop. Other witnesses confirmed that the restraints were manually checked before the train was dispatched. However, Fellner’s seatbelt was found to be unbuckled on the train’s return, with the ends tucked into the sides of the seat.

The report concludes by stating that Fellner placed herself in a position the coaster was not designed to accommodate, and the forces exerted on the body caused Fellner to be thrown from the train. The Raven is now open to the public again, having been given a clean bill of health.”

“September 2001, a woman died at Knott’s Berry Farm when she was ejected from Perilous Plunge. The woman weighed 330lbs and was standing up on the drop.”

All proof of evolution. Darwin Award winners all.

For those unfamilar with the Darwin Awards, the site’s mission statement:

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of the human genome by honoring those who accidentally kill themselves in really stupid ways.

I’d like to know how a 330 pound woman could find it within her to stand up on a ride in the first place.

Phaedrus & km2_33- liked the Darwin site- right on!
