Are there any authors putting out good work now about what life will be like 100 years from now? We’ve had Star Trek, 1984, and others in the past, but they were all written before cell phones and video games and the internet. I think we need some thinkers looking now at what things will be like given those changes and where society will go from here. I think they are significant enough to change the future and people are curious enough to see how today’s changes will play themselves out.
I’m not interested in that. I’m interested in forecasting where technology changes from the 1980s to now will go.
Harrison Bergeron forecasts where politics will go, though I am a fan of Vonnegut. My English teacher in high school was a fan. He turned me on to him.
…You know, Vonnegut was a peacenick. Slaughter House 5 was his anti-war piece. It doesn’t seem like you’re style to advocate the work of an anti-war activist.
right. the handicapper technology to make everyone equal is too political.
you miss the point of good science fiction… we have better tools, but the human animal is still the human animal.
peace and utopia for everyone

Imp, I got to put food on my family. I work in technology, so I need to know where it’s going to go to make decisions. Politics don’t have a lot of bearing on my life. I think it’s interesting, but not a top priority. This isn’t a purely philosophical exercise. I’m looking to apply what authors and philosophers are predicting to my life.
No, really.
I believe you. But, dude, I’m at work. I can’t get caught looking at that. That is for real?
The concept of the future is finished, over, end of story. Science and Technology are essentially finished, have finished “progressing” or “developing”, they are completely and totally over. What remains are modifications of the brain, direct modifications of the neural circuits, experiments with new brain organizations and new combinations of mind - brains - sensors etc. But this is not in any scheme of “progress”, is not defined as future or past, better or worse, it is just a different combination each time, a different casual combination and universe each time. Logic is over, just stick the wires and chemicals in that ball of meat called the brain.
Within this framework, time and progress and advancing of science are meaningless, each combination of modified brain - mind - emotion, sense circuits is simply a different universe - experience, a different instantaneous interaction of matter with itself. The technological singularity has already occured, modified minds create new universes.

Yep. Get into animatronics and robotics. The shape of things to come. Get your girlfriend off the peg. Get the hoovering plug-in, and the humorous anecdote module.
A match made in heaven for all sons of the net.
It’s not even a new idea.
