Snowy Egrets, fishing of course

Another of the smaller Herons, the Snowy Egret stands about 26 inches high. This bird fishes, and fishes and fishes…

Beautiful. An egret got cornered against my back door a few months back…stole a couple fish out of the koi pond and got one stuck in his throat. Cornered by a poodle and two bichon frise 'cause you ate too much…how humiliating is THAT?

That’s an adorable story…

To my surprise it is possible to semi-domesticate these birds. An aquantance of mine, feeds some Egrets and Herons fish, and they now sit outside his front door every morning, begging…

Shameful!

More beautiful shots, Chato. I have, in the past, spent winters on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Some of the egrets make such a steady living with people who fish from shore that you begin to recognise individuals. They are not quite tame, but they are no longer really wild, some of them. Call the “cautiously optimistic” about making new human friends.

Keep’em coming. They are delightful, and the herons and such have all but gobne from Maine for the season. I miss them.

Thanks Faust. I will keep them coming…

Great Blue Herons from time to time, will actually spend the Winter here in New York. I watched one guy, actually breaking holes in the ice so that he could fish. I imagine, if it gets really cold, he can always fly away.

I was surprised to learn about Herons becoming “tame.” A real shocker. But then again, I’ve never tried to feed them.
