So, what is hypnotism exactly?

Has anybody in this forum been hypnotised? I’ve never been, and just wonder what its like.
For example if the subjects are made to run round the stage on all fours barking like dogs, whats going through their minds, do they think they’re only dreaming or what? And when woken up, do they remember doing it?
Also, if people want to give up smoking, why don’t they just get a hypnotist to put them under and tell them “every time you attempt to light up you’ll feel sick and not want to” ?
How powerful is hypnotherapy anyway?

Conscious to subconscious programming = hypnosis.

C reprogramms SubC.

As Dan~ alluded to, the subconscious is quite a powerful place and when you attempt to alter it with an outside, absolutist (in a sense) force, you never know what exactly the result will be, especially with a precariously minded individual.

So for instance I know people who get visibly agitated when someone mentions or engages in smoking. The treatment worked, but almost too well – they’re scared of these things.

Can be insanely powerful, depending on what you do. Ever seen ‘The Bourne Identity?’ That stems from the MK-Ultra project (US) in which they did all sorts of mind control experiments with LSD and hypnosis so as to effectively dissolve any sort of Ego within the person into a streamlined, moral-less, (and consequently effective) assassin.

Well, they actually do that. I don’t know how successful the results are though…

I’ve never smoked in my life because the thought of starting made me feel physically sick, and I avoid smokers and their smoke like the plague for the same reason.
I think my cig-phobia stems from an incident when I was a toddler, my mum told me years later that I picked up a still-smouldering butt that somebody had dropped in the street and popped it into my mouth and burnt my tongue, and screamed for hours afterwards…
So I got an accidental jolt of “aversion therapy” from the incident that put me off cigs for life
