Does anyone discern what the difference(s) is? As I understand it the term sociobiology was coined by E.O. Wilson. Because Wilson stressed the link between evolution and genetics and behavioral practices as opposed to cultural origins, sociobiology was considered to be socially and politically conservative. Feminists for example reacted to it because it they thought it reinforces sexist stereotypy. Selfish gene theory was thought to justify males infidelity to monagamist relationships.
Evolutionary psychology (EP) builds on sociobiological research but is developing in a more liberal direction. The possibility of cognitive freedom to transcend one’s genetic programming is left open. EP explores bases for more diverse moral and cultural practices. What do you think?
the diff is sb looks at people as fitness maximizers while EP looks at people as adaptation executioners. One approach is vastly superior the other very sketchy. Your characterisations of EP as more ‘liberal’ is misleading, its just better/more realistic and testable.
Thank you both for your comments. Perhaps what I termed “liberal” could be more aptly called “politically correct”. An online article by Edward H. Hagen, Institute for Theoretical Biology, Berlin says the following:
Its not really ‘more’ politically correct its just more correct. For example the idea men are adapted to rape. (not necessarily true) but theres an example.
