Pezer, what were your reasons for posting this? I liked it, by the way, because I agreed with a lot of what Stephan Fry said.
But do you think what he said showed that he’s confused about philosophy, or that you’re confused by what he said?
First, he exposes some common confusions.
Then, he proceeds to set them straight.
Watch the video, you’ll understand.
Stephen Fry cannot actually be wrong about anything.
Interesting video, and I agree with him 100%, and not just because he is always right. I would say further the problems with philosophy only tend to arise when you start to treat philosophy as a sort of religious path. As if there is in any reason to have a philosophy as SF puts it.
And, problems arise when you start to treat anything as a sort of religious path.
I like the distinction he makes between a philosophy to follow (moral philosophy) and a philosophy of rigorous questioning. The latter he wonderfully describes as
The beauty of questioning and simplicity: the tiniest little elegant observation - or question - about something just spins out these immensely complex things that make you rethink everything.
That’s right.
The reevaluation of all values. That is what happens after a single minute of this kind of questioning. Anything else is lazyness or being compromised.
EDIT
I erased a bunch of stuff.
Don’t like it?
Go fuck yourself.
You okay, Pezer? Did something major change about ILP in the past few days? You seem so let down and frustrated all of a sudden.
EDIT
I tried, Fuse, but no answer is a good answer.
I watched the vid–twice–and said I agreed with him. I was confused by the thread title, is all.
Nice. This is about where I try to give you advice, but you know who am I to give advice. I think you’ll work it out in time if you keep writing about it. Not tonight, though. Anyways, I compiled all your edits for posterity. Go fuck yourself if you don’t like it. You may find it useful.
Eh, but I did my best not to give advice! lol. Night.
Since there’s apparently nothing to say and no interest in advancing the OP, I’m locking this thread.
Pezer, PM me if you’d like it unlocked.
All he did was spew out a roll of names in a somewhat jumbled up manner. He tried to answer the question rather than give his thought.
Wait a minute… this isn’t locked!
Hey fifth, did you use to be Trevor?
It seems something didn’t work. That’s what happens when I try to mod from a mobile phone.
Well, posts deleted and thread not locked.
Thanks O_H.
I agree, I fail to see how anyone can get anything remotely philosophically interesting from this clip…just a load of name dropping followed by his “wisdom” that philosophy isn’t about spirit or behaviour it’s about raising an “enormous amount of questions”…what’s the fucking point of that ? Philosophy should be about trying to give answers , not raise endless pointless questions .
I like Stephen Fry but I’m coming to the conclusion that he’s not half as clever as he thinks he is…actually he probably is.
Ah, some detractors at last!
Well, yes, the whole point of real philosophy is to discover the yet undiscovered in the post-European human’s understanding of himself (so far, hopefully this will soon become him or herself).
Giving answers is not discovery, it is an attempt at resolving what has been discovered. All philosophers, including the ones that Fry mentions, give answers; but I think it is fair to say that people who are interested in philosophy, as opposed to spirituality, tend to be more impressed by the questions raised, the issues revealed, than the answers givien for them.
Pezer, I love you but not a thing that quack said is worth being reprinted on even a birthday card.
