jeez future man, who’d you read last night that got you saying “masturbation this” and “masturbation that” It’s almost as bad as hearing new communists talk about the proletariat or Randroids going on about how they “won’t help anyone and don’t expect anyone to help” them
In Major League 2, there is a scene that suits this topic properly.
(Vaughn throws Parkman a strange pitch.)
Parkman: What do you call that garbage?
Vaughn: That’s the eliminator.
Parkman: The eliminator…?
Vaughn: I got a new one I’ll show ya…you get a piece of it, I’ll let you name it. (Vaughn pitches the ball and Parkman hits it out of the stadium.)
Parkman: I’d call it the masturbator.
masturbation is a good way to describe the actions of people who love to indulge in themselves. im not talking about investing in opportunities, masturbation refers specifically to buying stupid ass things simply so you feel good or feel like you look good. diamonds, fashion, ridiculous cars, multiple mansions etc.
is there a better word for it?
oh and i dont read stuff. i think for myself. ive found that people who read too much seem to associate ideas with other ideas WAY too easily. for example, all the people who think i advocate stalinism. virtually everybody, not so much you, but when i first started this rant, man that was annoying.
masturbation has nothing to do with buying stuff. You have to be careful with your use of masturbation as a metaphor.
For instance, literary masturbation is when someone writes a something full of flowery words and smart-sounding phrases, while not actually saying anything at all. You’ve probably seen many such posts on this very werbsite. If you wanted to extend the metaphor, the literary equivalent of having sex (i.e. between author and reader) would be a piece that actually communicates something. Both the reader and the author get something out of it; the author gets the pleasure of writing it, and the reader the pleasure of discovering new ideas, etc. A literary blowjob would be a self-help book, or maybe a comic book.
The same general relationship applies to other things like theatre and film.
Masturbation is not harmful, and isn’t particularly selfish, so it doesn’t describe such things very well.
