Sophie's world

This concerns a book about a young girl who delves into the world of philosophy whose name is Sophie Amundsen and comes in contact with a philosophy teacher named Alberto Knox. She learns about the various authors in that field and where their philosopies lie. This book would be a good intro for someone wanting to get a better feel for philosophy. I have a link from a site that gives a synopsis chapter by chapter. The link is:

Great book for the younger generation if they want to gain a basic understanding of philosophy. I like this book because it appeals to somone whos just starting out in philosophical thinking. Like a philosophy starter pack

This book is rather interesting.
It makes boring philosophy principles and history into some inspiring little questions to Sophia.
I like this book very much.

I’m reading it at the minute and it’s taking me forever to finish. I started off thinking it was a great way of setting out the history of philosophy in a simple and interesting way but now it’s getting a bit boring to be honest. The tone is extremely didactic, even patronising throughout and the story line isn’t that great. It seems like Jostein Gaarder thought more about how to explain the philosophies well, without giving too much thought to the story line which I would have thought was a vital part of the book. It’s good though if you want a simple and different intro to philosophy.

I think your riht with regards to the story. It seemed to me that he started off with a story in mind but towards the middle of the book realised that there were hundreds of years that he had to go over before the book ended. This made very dull reading. I would not agree that he is patronising though, but rather trying to appeal to the younger and less mature reader
