Do other religions practice this, or is it a christian thing?
Most of the old tribal religions have ritual where people become ‘possessed’ of the desired spirits/gods for augury, advice, etc…
The guy at church going “bibbity, bibbity, bibbity…” is something a bit ‘different’.
Yeah…that difference is called evolution.
The religious variation of tongue speaking in Christianity has an adaptation on it far different and rule-driven than any other known form.
I don’t know of another tongue speaking religion with more rules about what can and cannot be said during tongue speaking and how to authenticate a true instance of speaking in tongues; as well as guidelines to being a receiver of the Holy Spirit that will speak through you.
It’s nearly an entire manual to channeling; the Scientifically Christian way.
I think speaking in tongues is gibberish and nonsensical. disturbing even.
people ramble on randomly when they speak in tongues… they may be thinking about god, but their lips dwell in meaninglessness…
The Matis tribe (very obscure), sing songs in a similar way to speaking in tongues… everyone has their own unique song…
this apparantly enables them to speak with spirits and enhance their hunting skills…
they might sing repetitively “quick like ants, quick like ants” or “strong like a cat, strong like a cat”.
they do this in a very emotional way which reminds me of speaking in tongues…
Speaking in tongues is nothing more than a chant and a ritual. it’s something which provides focus…
when i used to play tetris incessantly on hard, when the blocks were piling up and i needed to act quickly and intelligently i would often start rambling nonsensical statements like “don’t go ivy league!! don’t go!”…
It really disturbs me when people consider speaking in tongues actual communication with a God… People consider prayer communication with god as well, so we know the non position where people claiming divine validity enter in and stand on.
people let their rational minds go and just feel what they are focusing on, which is the idea of a loving God…
this is why Christians speak in tongues…
I know what you mean about it seeming disturbing, I have always felt the same way, but yesterday ,I wittnessed a bizarre thing.
An older gentleman, had been searching for quite a while for the “Truth” the purpose of life and wanting to know his Creator. He approached a Man who was very familar with the idea of 'God". He asked the Man to pray for him, That he could find his way to the truth. The two Men held hands and prayed together, when they were done, They both smiled and walked away from one another. Just then, the older gentleman froze, his body started to tense up, as if he was being shocked with electricity. The man who had prayed with him had a look of worry on his face, perhaps thinking the man was having a stroke, he walked over to him and put his hands on him, as if to help hold him up, and all of sudden he started to speak to the man in a completly different language, like nothing I had ever heard before, it was very fast and it looked as though the man had no control over what he was saying.
Needless to say, my eyes were wide open after seeing that, I wondered what the heck had just happened. It was not faked, because no one was expecting it, and there was no audience for it to be a performance.
I spent all night researching this tongue speaking thing, but it all says the same thing, nothing outside of the box. I saw people speak in tongues when I was a teenager, I could not run fast enough to get away from that place, it gave me the willies, but this time was different, I did not feel creeped out at all, only curious about what I had just seen.
The moment it’s self seemed very genuine.
Are you sure that the older gentlemen didn;t already “know god”?
I have spontaneously broke into “speaking in tongues” while playing tetris… Perhaps you have to know what you want, but not know how to get it.
perhaps it’s a form of confusion that the subconscious resolves…
I would need more context and detail of your encounter to pass any accurate judgement, specifically descriptions of appearance, setting, context, time, intensity, mood, etc…
I’ve been in a room with thousands of people all speaking tongues at the same time… I have had a preacher lay hands on me and speak in tongues. I have tried to speak in tongues… all i ever heard or came up with is gibberish…
I wonder if it’s dangerous… unhinging your mind…
Last night I was at a little church in the country. Nothing fancy, no steeple, no pictures on the wall, but very neat and clean on the inside. It a non denominational church. There are Jews there, Catholics, Christians, It is a place for people who do not have a Church to attend. It does not focus on any particular religion, it is just a place of inspiration. The people there are very kind and everyone seems to have good intentions.
There is never a big crowd there, it is easy to remember names and faces. Wednesday are never crowded at all, maybe 10 people there.
Well, yesterday, the usual pastor was not there, he was away at a youth camp for the week, so another Man stood in for him. He was a younger guy, his young wife was also there, and most everyone else there was his family, mother, father, grandparents and his siblings. Perhaps his family came to watch him have his big night, being it was his first time talking infront of the church. Aside from his people I was the only other person there. The young Pastor tryed very hard to entertain his small group with light hearted humor, it was apparent that he was nervous, but he did a great job.
Well about twenty minutes into the service, the older gentleman entered thru the back of the church, This was his first time coming here. I could imagine it was probably awkward, because the church was quite empty, or perhaps maybe it was more comforting to him. He sat in a seat across the aisle from me diagonally.
The older gentle was about fiftey, he looked to be a retired military man, I know because he reminded me a lot of my father. His haircut, and his tidy appearance.
I spent most of my time watching him, not in a creepy way, but because it was easy to do and being that he was the only person I could look at other than the pastor. He had a Bible with him, and a small notebook, that he would write small quotes the pastor would say. He seemed to take in everything that the young Pastor was talking about. I found it to be admirable, because he was obviously making an effort.
Finally, it was the end of the service, the Young Pastor thanked us for coming out, and said that if anyone needed a special prayer, they were welcome to come up to the front and he would pray with them.
The young Pastor sat down and looked at the floor, perhaps hoping that someone might come up, but no one did, there was a very awkward silence, even more so than earlier, but Just as the Young Pastor was about to give up, and dismiss everyone, the older Gentleman had walked to the front.
I was relieved because I could tell the young pastor was hoping for this, atleast a shot to pray for someone. I could see the older gentleman speaking quietly to the pastor, and the pastor listening to him intently, his face was very gentle as he looked at the older gentleman speak. The young pastor bowed his head with the older gentleman and held his hands. His words were very kind as he prayed for this man. It was a beautiful prayer.
The rest is as I stated above… There were no sinister motives that I could see. The language did not seem like gibberish, like I have heard in the past. It sounded beautiful, the sounds were not the same over and over, every sound was different, and smooth. It almost sounded like Hebrew, but very differnt at the same time. Honestly, it would be hard to describe. It was not a long drawn out speech in a different language, it was only a few short words.
I could tell it was not planned because the young Pastor seemed confused about what had just happened, so did his young wife. In a strange way it looked like the young Pastor was in a trance, and it started the moment he touched the older gentleman when he appeared to be having a stroke.
I know this may seem silly to write about, or even mention, because I saw comments from other forums when I researched this, and people do not take this kind of thing kindly, but I really am curious about it.
I like to think I am intuitive, My intuition is not telling me this was a bad thing. I am not sure what to think. But what I saw was very real.
Sorry to ramble, my head is full of thoughts today.
Thanks for taking the time.
Regards,
I didn’t suggest that it was gibberish.
I had suggested that it is highly evolved religious practice in the Christian form.
My personal take on it is that I personally don’t like it.
First thing it makes me want to do is reach out and smack the person because the tongues that were being spoken in the Bible were other languages so that other people that spoke other languages could understand what they were saying; not other languages because they were divine languages.
So tongue speaking, personally, has never fit into Christianity as authentic to itself.
Be that as it is, many people do it, and they all do it in completely different “tongues”, and for whatever reasons they feel it is needed.
I’m going to read this and try to analyse the situation. i will be as honest as i can with my notes…
this seems very felt… It gives me insight into the event, of which i am familliar, but more so it gives me insight into your own perception, which seems to have been impressed with a sense of hopeful anticipation.
very smooth deivery . if i didn;t know better i’d say this was a short story… very relatable…
If these inquiries are strange, please forgive me…
Are you a non-demoninational believer yourself?
If so how long have you been self-aware of these beliefs?
I see in you my young religious self… I am only 20 myself, but this was me 3-5 years ago…
Based on that i would guess you are 17, but you write too well for that (and again please forgive me), so bsed on that i would say you have been more seriously involved in the more spiritual side of life for 2-3 years?
it was probably a good thing. Meditating and mentally resolving internal conflicts are ways we can change and adapt our minds to our lives as they progress.
Not all of us learn the same way though…
If i had to make an uneducated sweeping assumption (i like to think i’m intuitive too ), i would say that what was exchanged was beneficial or felt really good to the older gentlemen. I am half inclined to say this man goes from church to church getting spiritual fixes
,
that would be one possibility, it also could be that this man was seeking out spiritual guidance, and this particular guidance helped him, and he spontaneously erupted, overwhelmed by the experience…
It’s a pleasure… you may have noticed i can ramble as well
Your observation was fun to read.
You are right, we all do things differently, we do not learn the same way.
I am not sure if I would consider myself non~denominational, I am not a religious person. I go there because I feel comfortable, and I enjoy being around good people. { the circumstance of finding this place makes for a story of its own}
I have learned to appreciate religions, because of what they offer people, but I am also weary of religion, because of what it has done to some.
I spent most of my twenties studing different religions, I was on a search for the “Truth”. I was almost obsessed with it, I drove myself crazy. Every time I thought I solved a mystery, I would end up with a 100 more questions. I was on a never ending quest. Ultimatley, I discovered what I already knew, nothing. And, what I found, I already knew.
I feel confident with what I know.
There is no proof, only Faith.
I like that I remind you of your younger self, because that is what Faith does. It is like being a child again, Santa Clause, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy; We can not see them, but we believe it is real.
A man told me once that when I write, I should keep it simple, he said ,even a child should understand. As we grow our minds forget how to be simple.
Regards,
Thank you for your response.
What about you? What have you figured out so far about your own belief, being that this is relatable to you.
First of all I would like to express my admiration of your exploration into the realm of religion. To not try would be missing one of the aspects of your spirituality. Some don’t even try and dismiss it offhand.
In regards to speaking in tongues, this is supposed to be The Holy Spirit moving through and interacting in people who seek a closer relationship with God. Sometimes it involves joyous pronouncements, while at other times prophetic allusions come about. Not everyone present during this type of event will experience the same thing or even at all. As far as I understand it has to do with the receptability of people in the presence of The Holy Spirit. I have not had the pleasure of undergoing this blessed occurence. A lot of people who have usually don’t remember what transpired. The only way they find out is from the people around them that winessed it.
Hello Liteninbolt, thank you for your kind comment.
I am posting a video of a News special done about speaking in tongue. It is very strange to me, it is very different from what I witnessed. Some of this looks kinda creepy, even fake.
How in the world can an entire stadium full of people speak in tongue at the same time? I can see the random event as meaningful, but to see thousands of people at the same time is almost tainting.
However, there is one Man on this video that sounds simular to what I heard. He is the man that lies on the table and allows doctors to run test on his brain while he speakes in tongue, his sounds are simular to what I heard, in the sense that it sounded smooth and beautiful.
Then, there is a Woman with dread locks and glasses that throws me for a loop.

This next one is a completly different perspective. This fella is a good time!

hmmmmm…
I (sometimes) see life as a frontier where i am the adventurer… It’s not really relatable to my past… Boldness usually brought mistakes…
Lust for life is what i have… And for now that’s all i need…
Cheers
